Chapter 4

The massive oak doors of the ballroom slammed shut behind the departing caterers and security staff, leaving only the hum of the ventilation system and the soft, rhythmic breathing of little Lily. Arthur did not blink as he looked down at his son, who remained slumped against the marble pillar like a discarded mannequin. The black tuxedo, once a symbol of corporate success and social ascension, was now torn at the shoulder and stained with dust and blood. Julian opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out; the absolute certainty in his father’s eyes told him that begging would be entirely useless.

"Effective midnight," Arthur said, his voice devoid of any paternal warmth, "your corporate credit cards are frozen. The executive apartment in Manhattan is already being cleared by my legal team. Your name has been officially removed from the board of directors of Vance Global Logistics."

Julian scrambled to his feet, panic finally breaking his vocal cords. "You can't do that! I spent ten years securing those Asian shipping lanes! I brought the company into the digital age! You're destroying everything I've built!"

"Everything you've built?" Arthur scoffed, a dry, humorless sound. "You didn't build Vance Global. I built it with my bare hands while your mother worked herself to the bone. You merely inherited the keys to the kingdom and used them to lock your own daughter in a closet so you could play high-society peacock."

"Dad, listen to reason!" Julian shouted, lunging forward, only to be blocked by two burly private security guards who had silently materialized from the shadows of the foyer. "You can't cast me out like a stray dog over a child's tantrum! It was a marketing strategy!"

"A marketing strategy," Arthur repeated, the words tasting like poison on his tongue. He bent down, scooped little Lily effortlessly into his arms, and cradled her head against his shoulder. The little girl wrapped her arms tightly around his neck, her breathing finally evening out as she felt the absolute safety of her grandfather's embrace. Arthur turned his back on his son, walking slowly toward the private elevator that led down to the subterranean parking garage.

"Father!" Julian screamed, his voice cracking as the security guards stepped closer to physically restrain him from following. "You'll regret this! Without me, the board will tear the company apart within a month!"

Arthur paused at the elevator doors, not even bothering to look back over his shoulder. The elevator chime dinged softly, the polished brass doors sliding open to reveal a warmly lit interior.
