Chapter 13

The afternoon bell of St. Jude’s Elementary School rang out across the manicured courtyard, sending a cheerful wave of children pouring through the double oak doors. Backpacks bounced against small shoulders, and laughter echoed off the brick walls as parents waited by the iron gates to collect their kids. Among the crowd stood Arthur Vance, dressed in a simple dark trench coat and blue shirt, leaning slightly on a polished wooden cane that he no longer strictly needed for support, but appreciated for the balance. He didn't look like a ruthless corporate tycoon; he looked like a proud, doting grandfather waiting for his favorite person in the world.

Through the crowd of children came seven-year-old Lily, her blonde hair styled in her familiar half-up pigtails, wearing a pale yellow dress and her trusty cream cardigan. She clutched a bright red construction-paper drawing in her hands, her blue eyes scanning the waiting parents until they locked onto Arthur standing by the gate. A huge, beaming smile broke across her face.

"Grandpa!" she shouted, breaking away from her classmates and running as fast as her small legs could carry her.

Arthur dropped his cane against the brick wall, opened his arms wide, and caught her as she launched herself into his embrace, lifting her spinning slightly off the ground before setting her gently back on her feet. Lily threw her arms around his neck, burying her face against his shoulder.

"Look, Grandpa! I got an A-plus on my art project!" she declared excitedly, holding up the red construction-paper drawing for him to inspect. It was a crayon drawing of a large stone house surrounded by blooming white flowers, with two stick figures standing side by side—one tall with a silver head, one small with blonde pigtails.

Arthur took the drawing gently, his eyes misting slightly as he looked at the simple, beautiful artwork. "This is a masterpiece, Lily. I’m framing this and hanging it right above my desk in the study. Right next to the shipping manifests."

Lily giggled, taking his large, calloused hand in her small fingers as they began the short walk toward the waiting car where Thomas held the rear door open. "Can we bake chocolate chip cookies when we get home? Mrs. Gable said I could help crack the eggs this time."

"We can bake as many cookies as you want," Arthur replied, walking step-for-step beside her down the sunlit sidewalk. "We’ll make enough to feed half of Westchester."

As they reached the car, Arthur paused, looking back down the street toward the city skyline in the distance. The ghosts of his past—the cold boardrooms, the hollow ambitions, the night of the gala—felt like they belonged to another lifetime entirely. He had spent decades building an empire of steel and paper, only to realize too late that the only things of real value in this world are the ones we hold onto with love, patience, and unwavering protection.

Just as Thomas opened the car door for them, Lily suddenly stopped, pointing up at the sky.
