Chapter 9

Vance unbuttoned his top tunic pocket, reaching inside to pull out a small, worn leather notebook filled with handwritten notes, personal logs, and carbon copies of original supply orders from FOB Delta. He held the notebook up so the camera on Elena’s phone could capture every detail. The room grew so quiet that the hum of the overhead air conditioning sounded like a jet engine.
“I kept the real ledger,” Vance said, his voice echoing clearly across the ballroom. “Every shipment that went missing, every forged signature, every warehouse drop in the valley—it’s all documented right here. I didn't destroy it because I couldn't live with the lie forever. I kept it as insurance against my own cowardice.”
Elena looked sideways at Vance, her expression softening for the first time since she had knelt on the ballroom floor with the red telephone. The anger that had sustained her through a decade of isolation seemed to melt away, leaving behind a profound shared grief. She reached out and gently touched his sleeve, her fingers brushing against the gold epaulets.
“You finally answered the call, Thomas,” she murmured, her voice barely audible over the hum of the electronics.
Down at the foot of the stage, Robert Sterling realized the game was entirely over. He cast a venomous glare at Vance, turned sharply on his heel, and began marching rapidly toward the exit doors at the back of the ballroom. Several guests stood up to block his path, effectively cutting off his escape route until local authorities could arrive. Sterling stopped, trapped by the very society members he had manipulated for years, his shoulders slumping in absolute defeat.

Vance closed the leather notebook and tucked it carefully back into his pocket. He turned to face the audience fully, standing tall without leaning on the podium, shedding the defensive posture that had defined his military career. The projection screen behind him flickered once more, the incriminating financial documents finally fading away to reveal a simple, clean white background bearing the seal of the Department of Defense Inspector General—a direct digital feed indicating that federal investigators had already been pinged by the live stream data transmission.
The nightmare was ending, not in violence or screaming, but in the quiet, devastating light of absolute truth. Vance took a deep, steady breath, feeling the tension drain entirely from his muscles as he prepared for whatever consequences awaited him when the authorities arrived.
