Chapter 4

The electronic hum grew louder, vibrating through the floorboards and rattling the water glasses on the banquet tables. Vance stood before the podium, his posture still rigid, but his eyes were darting between the static-filled projection screen and the woman walking slowly toward the stage steps. Elena moved with a quiet grace, her dark ponytail swaying against her back, the red toy telephone clutched in her hand like a sacred relic. The audience members watched in stunned silence now; the laughter had completely died away, replaced by an uneasy collective breath held in the heavy air.

“I said turn it off!” Vance yelled into the microphone, his voice echoing with a raw urgency that finally stripped away the polished veneer of his military rank.

At the sound of his command, the lead audio technician at the back of the room frantically pulled the master power switch, plunging the auxiliary speakers into sudden, absolute silence. Yet, despite the dead sound system, the electronic buzzing continued, emanating directly from the giant screen behind the stage. The static began to resolve into grainy, black-and-white footage—a shaky camera angle shot from the interior of a concrete bunker during a heavy rainstorm. Dust motes danced in the beam of a single halogen work light, illuminating rows of green ammunition crates and a makeshift communications desk cluttered with maps, coffee mugs, and several vintage red rotary telephones.

Vance’s breath hitched. He recognized that bunker instantly. It was Forward Operating Base Delta, located in a remote mountain valley where he and Elena had served together exactly ten years ago. He had been the commanding officer responsible for supply logistics; she had been the civilian liaison tracking emergency relief funds. The date stamp in the corner of the grainy video flickered into focus, displaying a string of numbers that corresponded to the exact night the supply depot had been systematically looted, leaving dozens of local civilians stranded without aid and setting off a chain of events that had resulted in three court-martials and one unresolved disappearance.

Elena reached the base of the stage stairs, paused for a fraction of a second, and began to climb. Her eyes remained locked on Vance, filled with an unbearable depth of sorrow and accusation. The room around them seemed to fade away, the wealthy donors and corporate executives transformed into silent, ghostly spectators of a tragedy that had never truly ended.
