Chapter 10

The heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom swung open with a sharp click, admitting two federal agents in dark suits accompanied by a uniformed city police officer. The murmurs in the room died down instantly as the trio walked with purposeful strides down the central aisle. Guests parted automatically to let them through, casting nervous glances between the federal badges and Robert Sterling, who stood trapped near the exit with his hands stuffed deep into his pockets, staring fixedly at the floor.
The lead agent, a woman with sharp features and graying hair tied back in a neat bun, approached the front of the stage and looked up at Vance and Elena. She held up her credentials briefly before speaking, her voice clear and authoritative, cutting through the lingering hum of the electronics.
“Colonel Thomas Vance? And Elena Cruz?” the agent asked, scanning their faces.
“I’m Colonel Vance,” Vance replied steadily, stepping down from the stage to meet her on the floor level. “And this is Elena Cruz. We have the documentation you’re looking for.”
Vance reached into his tunic pocket and withdrew the worn leather notebook, extending it toward the federal agent. She took it carefully, opening it to the first handwritten page marked with the FOB Delta stamp. Her eyes scanned the entries quickly, a flicker of professional recognition crossing her face as she cross-referenced the serial numbers and authorization codes with notes stored on her encrypted tablet.
“We’ve been tracking these diversion patterns for over a year,” the agent said, looking back up at Vance with a measure of grim respect. “The inspector general's office picked up the live data feed from your presentation a few minutes ago. Every transfer record matches our internal red flags.” She turned her gaze toward Robert Sterling, who was now being flanked by the city police officer near the doors. “Mr. Sterling, you’re coming with us.”

Sterling didn't protest. He allowed the officer to place handcuffs around his wrists, his head bowed in quiet resignation as he was led out of the hotel ballroom. The wealthy donors seated at the banquet tables watched the arrest in stunned silence, their wine glasses untouched, the glittering chandeliers overhead suddenly feeling far too bright and suffocating for a room filled with such exposed secrets.
Elena descended the stage stairs slowly, joining Vance and the federal agent on the floor. She still carried the red plastic toy telephone, its coiled cord resting against her palm like an anchor from a storm that had finally cleared. The agent looked down at the red toy with mild curiosity, but made no comment, recognizing that some symbols carried personal meanings far beyond the scope of a federal investigation.
