Chapter 7 - The Knock at Midnight

The sharp, rhythmic pounding against the wooden door of Room 408 shattered the fragile silence of the suite. Julian froze, the fraudulent laboratory report trembling violently between his fingers. Clara let out a sharp gasp, stepping back until her spine pressed hard against the bedroom doorframe. Lily, startled by the sudden noise, began to whimper softly from her stroller, rubbing her tired eyes with small, balled fists.
"Julian, don't open it," Clara whispered, her voice laced with sheer panic. "It could be him. It could be that crazy old man coming back to finish whatever psychotic game he started downstairs."
Julian didn't answer. He dropped the paper onto the coffee table, stood up slowly, and crept toward the entryway. He peered through the tiny brass peephole, expecting to see Arthur’s weathered face staring back with cold, accusing eyes. Instead, the fisheye lens revealed a tall, sharply dressed man in a dark charcoal suit, holding a leather briefcase and wiping sweat from his forehead with a monogrammed handkerchief. It wasn't Arthur.
Julian hesitated for a brief second before twisting the deadbolt and pulling the heavy door open a few inches, keeping the security chain firmly engaged.
"Can I help you?" Julian demanded, his voice hard and defensive.
The man in the suit blinked in surprise, then quickly flashed a small, leather-bound identification folder through the narrow gap. "Mr. Julian Vance? My name is Marcus Sterling. I’m an attorney representing the estate of your late father, Richard Vance. I’ve been trying to reach your mobile phone for the past forty-eight hours."
Julian stared at the ID badge, his mind racing to connect the dots. "An attorney? My father’s estate was settled months ago. Every asset, every account—it was all processed through the firm downtown. What is this about?"
Marcus Sterling lowered his badge, his expression grave and deeply troubled. "Your father’s corporate holdings were settled, yes. But Richard Vance maintained a private, sequestered trust managed independently from the main corporate portfolio. A trust that contained instructions specifically to be executed only if a certain... discrepancy from five years ago came to light."
Clara pushed past Julian, slipping the security chain off the door with a sharp snap and pulling it wide open. She stared at the lawyer with wild, desperate eyes. "A discrepancy? Are you talking about the hospital? Are you talking about the baby?"
Marcus looked between Julian and Clara, his professional demeanor faltering slightly under the raw, visible anguish of the parents. He slowly lowered his briefcase to the floor and took a step inside the suite. "I’m afraid I am, Mrs. Vance. Your father knew the truth about the maternity mix-up at St. Jude’s Hospital from the very first week it happened."
Julian slammed the door shut behind the lawyer, his fists clenched at his sides. "You're telling me my father knew he was raising someone else's child? He knew a family out there had their baby stolen, and he just covered it up?"
"He didn't just cover it up, Mr. Vance," Marcus said quietly, reaching into his briefcase to pull out a thick, heavy manila envelope tied with a red ribbon. "He orchestrated the legal shield that kept the other family from ever finding out. And according to these documents, he left a contingency fund specifically designed to silence anyone who ever tried to dig it back up."
Clara stared at the red-ribboned envelope as if it were a venomous snake. "My God," she whispered, her knees buckling slightly before she caught herself on the edge of the dresser. "We’ve been living a lie. Everything we thought we built, everything we believed about our family... it was all bought with someone else's heartbreak."

Marcus set the heavy envelope on the coffee table right on top of the DNA report. He looked directly at Julian, his eyes dark and uncompromising. "The man you met downstairs—Arthur Henderson—he isn't a stalker, Mr. Vance. He’s the grandfather of the child your father took. And he just filed an emergency petition in federal court to DNA-test every member of this household."
