Chapter 5 - The Safe Combination

The frantic grip of the security guards on Julian’s arms instantly loosened as the sheer absurdity and terrifying reality of Arthur’s words slammed into him. Julian stopped struggling, his breath catching in his throat. He stared at Arthur, the color draining entirely from his face.

"What... what did you just say?" Julian stammered, his voice dropping to a harsh, breathless whisper. "How could you possibly know about the safe in our suite?"

Clara gasped, dropping the hospital report onto the velvet cushion. She stood up so quickly she nearly knocked Lily off the settee. "Julian," she whispered, her eyes wide with mounting panic. "Did you put something in the hotel safe? What is he talking about?"

Arthur gently stepped past the hesitant security guards, his heavy dark jacket rustling softly in the quiet lobby. He reached into his pocket once more, pulling out a small, metallic keycard—the exact master override key that only the hotel’s general manager was supposed to possess. He held it up for a fraction of a second before slipping it back into his pocket.

"Your father taught you how to build a fortress, Julian, but he forgot to teach you how to change the factory default settings on commercial-grade room safes," Arthur said smoothly, his tone terrifyingly calm. "It took me ten minutes with a pocket multi-tool and a bit of patience to access your belongings yesterday afternoon. I didn't steal your watch, and I didn't take your cash. I just left a standard cheek-swab kit right beside your passport, along with a copy of the court order compelling you to use it."

Clara turned on Julian, her eyes blazing with a fury that burned brighter than any anger Julian had ever seen in her. "You knew!" she screamed, stepping right up to him and shoving her open palm hard against his chest. "You knew someone was looking into our lives, and you kept it from me? You put a DNA kit in our safe and didn't say a word?"

"I didn't know what it was!" Julian yelled back, his voice cracking as he desperately tried to defend himself against the crushing weight closing in around them. "A package was delivered to the front desk three days ago with my name on it! I put it in the safe because I thought it was some kind of sick prank or junk mail!"

"Prank?" Clara’s voice rose to a hysterical pitch, drawing horrified stares from the few remaining guests across the lobby. "A legal DNA kit is a prank? Look at our daughter, Julian! Look at her!"

Arthur stood silently a few paces away, watching the couple unravel with a look of profound, sorrowful detachment. He reached down and scooped up the small leather-bound photo album from the marble floor, dusting off the cover with his thumb.

"There's no need to argue in the middle of a hotel lobby," Arthur said quietly, interrupting their heated exchange. "The truth doesn't care about your arguments, and it certainly won't go away just because you yell loud enough to wake the staff."

Julian turned on Arthur, his face distorted with rage and helpless terror. "Get out of our sight. If you are within fifty feet of us in the next five minutes, I'll call every federal agency in this country and have you locked away so deep you'll never see daylight again."

Arthur didn't blink. He simply turned his head toward the open elevator banks across the foyer, where the brass doors slid open with a soft, polite chime to reveal an empty car. Then, slowly, he reached down and picked up the heavy luggage cart with its gleaming gold rails, turning it around to face the elevators.

"Room 408," Arthur said softly, his back turned to them as he began pushing the cart forward. "That’s where you left the swab kit. I suggest you go upstairs, open the safe, and run the test yourself. Because when the results sync to your phone in twenty minutes, you’ll realize the little girl you’ve been raising isn't yours—and my real granddaughter is currently sitting in a foster home three states away because I couldn't prove who she was until today."
