Chapter 11 - The Second Anomaly

The glowing screen of Julian’s phone cast a harsh, unnatural blue light across his wet, trembling face. The rain continued to drum steadily against the glass canopy above the federal courthouse entrance, but Julian no longer heard it. His ears were ringing with a high-pitched, deafening silence. Clara stopped beside him, her arms tightening protectively around a sleeping Lily as she noticed the sudden, terrifying change in her husband's expression.
"Julian? What is it?" Clara whispered urgently, her voice shaking. "Did Marcus send another court filing? What’s on the screen?"
Julian couldn't speak. He stared down at the supplemental laboratory notification, reading the automated text over and over again until the words blurred into meaningless shapes. The test results hadn't just confirmed that Lily wasn't biologically related to him and Clara. The secondary genetic marker cross-reference—run automatically against the national missing persons and unidentified infant database as part of the federal court order—had flagged an entirely separate, catastrophic discrepancy.
"Julian, talk to me!" Clara cried out, her voice cracking with mounting hysteria, drawing the sharp attention of the armed security guards stationed just inside the glass doors. "What did you find?"
Arthur stepped closer, his weathered face tightening into a mask of grim anticipation. He looked down at the phone in Julian’s hand, his eyes narrowing as he sensed the tectonic shift in the air. "What does the report say, son?"
Julian slowly raised his head, his eyes wide, bloodshot, and completely unmoored from reality. He looked at Arthur, then down at Lily sleeping peacefully against Clara’s shoulder, and finally back at the glowing screen.
"The DNA... it matches," Julian choked out, his voice a ragged whisper. "Arthur... the genetic profile matches your family tree, exactly like you said. Lily is your granddaughter. The hospital swap... it’s 100% verified."
Clara let out a sharp, ragged gasp of relief mixed with utter devastation. "Then... then why are you still shaking, Julian? What else does the screen say?"
Julian swallowed hard, the muscles in his throat locking up. "The system didn't just cross-reference Lily's DNA against your family, Arthur. Because of the federal mandate, it ran a complete familial lineage sweep across the entire national database." Julian paused, his breath hitching violently. "And it found a secondary match within our own immediate household."
Arthur’s calm exterior finally cracked. He took a sharp step forward, grabbing Julian by the forearm with surprising strength. "What are you talking about? What secondary match?"
Julian looked directly into Arthur’s eyes, the horror of the realization washing over him in a freezing wave. "The DNA profile we submitted for Lily... it didn't just match your daughter, Sarah. It matched my mother's mitochondrial DNA marker on file from her medical records twenty-five years ago."
Clara stared at Julian, her brow furrowing in total incomprehension. "Your mother? What does your mother have to do with this? She passed away years before we even met!"
Julian’s voice dropped to a terrified, breathless rasp. "My mother didn't just pass away, Clara. According to these records... my mother was a patient in the exact same maternity ward at St. Jude’s Hospital twenty-five years ago, giving birth to a child the hospital officially logged as stillborn."
Before anyone could process the staggering implications of Julian's words, the heavy glass doors behind them swung open, and Marcus Sterling rushed out into the rain, holding a damp manila folder with a look of absolute panic on his face.

"Mr. Vance! Stop!" Marcus yelled, skidding to a halt on the wet granite steps. "Do not execute the custody transfer yet! You need to read the addendum to your father’s estate trust that was just unsealed by the probate judge ten minutes ago!"
