Chapter 6 - The Elevator Ride

The heavy brass doors of the elevator slid shut with a soft, metallic thud, sealing Julian, Clara, and Lily inside a cramped, mirrored cage. The reflection of Julian’s bruised, desperate expression stared back at him from every direction, multiplying his panic a thousand times over. Clara stood rigidly in the far corner of the car, her arms wrapped tightly around her own body as if she were freezing to death. Lily sat quietly in a stroller they had quickly grabbed from the concierge desk, sucking on her thumb with wide, uncomprehending eyes.

Neither of them spoke. The upward motion of the car was completely silent, yet the mechanical hum felt deafening against the suffocating tension filling the space. Every second stretched like an hour as the digital floor indicator ticked slowly upward: 1... 2... 3... 4.

The chime rang out brightly, and the doors glided open to reveal the quiet, dimly lit hallway of the fourth floor. Room 408 was just fifty feet down the plush burgundy carpet. Julian stepped out first, his wet shoes squeaking softly against the fabric. His hands shook violently as he pulled the room keycard from his pocket, sliding it into the electronic lock with clumsy haste. The green light flashed, and he shoved the heavy door open, stepping into the suite.

"Julian, stop," Clara said, her voice trembling as she lingered in the hallway threshold, refusing to cross the line into the room.

Julian turned around, his chest heaving. "What? You heard what he said. We have to check the safe. We have to prove this insane old man is lying out of his mind!"

"And what if he isn't?" Clara whispered, a single tear finally breaking free and tracking a clean path down her pale cheek. "What if the DNA test confirms every horrifying thing he just threw in our faces? What happens to Lily? Who is she, Julian? If she's not our daughter, who the hell have I been raising for the past five years?"

Julian felt a sharp, burning pain in his chest, as if a fist were squeezing his heart. He crossed the room in two rapid strides, dropping to his knees in front of the concealed wall safe hidden behind a framed landscape painting. He punched in his personal four-digit birthdate combination with frantic speed. The heavy steel door clicked and swung open.

Inside, resting neatly on a small velvet tray beside his passport and spare watch, sat a small, sterile white cardboard box bearing the bold logo of a national DNA testing laboratory. Next to it lay an unopened envelope addressed to Julian Vance in neat, precise handwriting.

Julian reached out slowly, his fingertips brushing the cardboard box as if it were radioactive. He pulled it out of the safe, his breath catching in his throat.

"Open it," Clara commanded softly, stepping into the room and closing the door behind her with a definitive click. "Open the box, Julian. Let's end this nightmare right now."

Julian tore the cardboard flap open, pulling out the foil-wrapped collection swabs, the instruction booklet, and a pre-printed barcode label. But tucked underneath the testing kit was a single, folded sheet of hospital stationary bearing a letterhead that made Julian’s blood run instantly cold. It wasn't just a collection kit; it was a completed chain-of-custody report from a private laboratory in Chicago, dated just four days ago.

Julian unfolded the paper with trembling fingers, his eyes scanning down to the final conclusion paragraph at the bottom of the page.

"Probability of paternity: 0.0%," Julian whispered aloud, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. He stared at the paper in total disbelief. "No. No, this is impossible. This is a complete fabrication!"

Before Clara could step forward to grab the paper from his hand, a sharp, urgent knock rattled heavily against the suite's front door.
