Chapter 9: The Eviction Notice

The silence in the boardroom was absolute, broken only by the faint hum of the centralized ventilation system. Julian stood frozen with his hand outstretched, his fingers trembling in mid-air as Elena’s words hung heavily between them. The absolute finality in her tone stripped away whatever residual bravado he had clung to over the past twenty-four hours.
"You can't do this," Julian whispered, his voice cracking with a mixture of disbelief and sheer terror. "You can't just strip away everything I’ve built. I am the face of Vance Tech. The media knows me. The investors know me!"
"The media knows a figurehead who spent more time on yacht clubs than code reviews," Elena replied, walking slowly around the mahogany table until she stood just a few feet away from him. Up close, her dark eyes were like chips of polished obsidian. "And the investors? They have already received a comprehensive audit detailing your systematic embezzlement of research funds for personal luxuries over the past eighteen months."
Julian’s breath caught in his throat. "Embezzlement? That’s a lie! I used those funds for corporate expansion!"
"You used corporate accounts to purchase a private vacation home in the Bahamas under your mother's maiden name," Elena countered smoothly, pulling a crisp printed bank statement from her folder and holding it up for him to see. "My legal team flagged the transaction three months ago. I chose to wait until you made your next definitive move—like locking me out in the rain—before executing the termination clause."
Julian stared at the paper, his mind racing wildly. The trap had been set months ago, and he had walked right into it, whistling the whole way. Every arrogant dismissal, every condescending remark he and his mother had hurled at Elena over the years had only served to tighten the noose.
"Please, Elena," Julian said, his voice dropping to a pathetic, pleading whisper as he took a half-step forward. "Think about our history. Think about the years we spent together. I was foolish, I admit it. Mother got into my head. But we can work this out. I'll apologize to Mother, we'll sell the vacation home, we can—"
"Your mother's legal status is currently being reviewed as well," Elena interrupted, her voice devoid of any warmth or mercy. "Evelyn signed as a secondary guarantor on several fraudulent corporate loans. If she wishes to avoid criminal indictment for wire fraud, she will vacate the coastal mansion by sundown tomorrow."
Julian staggered backward as if he had been physically struck, his hip bumping against the edge of a leather chair. "You're evicting my mother too?"
May you like
"I am taking back what is mine," Elena corrected him, turning her back on him to look out at the Manhattan skyline. "Your personal belongings—what little of them are actually yours and not purchased with Veritas capital—are currently being packed into cardboard boxes at the front desk downstairs. You have forty-eight hours to clear out of the city entirely."
Julian opened his mouth to protest further, but the words died in his throat. He looked at the fierce, unbroken woman standing before him, realizing with absolute clarity that he had destroyed his own life with a single yellow envelope.
