Chapter 5: The Sunset Estate

While Elena orchestrated her corporate counter-offensive from the heights of Manhattan, Julian Vance was pouring himself a cup of imported espresso in the sunlit kitchen of the coastal mansion. The morning light poured through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors, illuminating the pristine marble countertops and the minimalist aesthetic that he so deeply adored. He wore another light blue button-down shirt, identical in style to the one from the night before, reveling in the quiet peace of his newly regained independence.
Evlyn sat across the island, leisurely sipping her tea from a porcelain cup, a smug expression resting comfortably on her wrinkled face.
"I must admit, Julian, you handled that little pest with admirable efficiency," Evelyn said, setting her cup down with a soft click. "Elena was always far too ambitious for her own good. A woman like that needs to be put in her place. Without your name and your company, she’s nothing."
Julian smiled, leaning against the counter and taking a slow sip of his espresso. "It was overdue, Mother. She was starting to get too comfortable making executive decisions around the house. I gave her a reality check. Let her spend a night at a cheap motel; it will teach her some humility."
His phone buzzed on the granite countertop, vibrating rhythmically against the stone. Julian glanced down at the screen, expecting an alert from his personal banking app or a message from his chief financial officer regarding the quarterly projections. Instead, a calendar notification popped up: Urgent Shareholder Review – Veritas Holdings Corporate Headquarters – 2:00 PM.
Julian frowned, tapping the screen to open the notification. The location was listed as the forty-fifth-floor executive boardroom of Veritas Holdings—the massive conglomerate that had quietly provided seed funding for Vance Tech years ago. He had always viewed Veritas as a distant, benevolent institutional investor that simply collected its dividends and left him to run the company as he saw fit. He had never even met the primary controlling stakeholder, who operated through anonymous trust proxies and high-powered legal representatives.
"Something wrong, dear?" Evelyn asked, noticing the slight furrow in her son's brow.
"Just a mandatory review with our primary investors," Julian muttered, waving away her concern with a dismissive flick of his wrist. "Veritas Holdings wants a progress update on the new product line. Typical corporate bureaucracy. I’ll swing by the city this afternoon, sign a few routine compliance papers, and put them in their place."

"Don't let them push you around, Julian," Evelyn warned, her eyes narrowing slightly. "You are the visionary behind Vance Tech. They are merely background financiers."
Julian chuckled, tossing his espresso cup into the sink. "Exactly, Mother. I built this empire. Nobody can touch me."
