Chapter 9

The nurse stepped fully into the room, her eyes darting nervously between Ethan and Sarah before she looked down at the medical chart clutched tightly against her chest. The heavy silence that had settled after Arthur’s departure was instantly replaced by an antiseptic, clinical tension. Ethan withdrew his hand from the baby’s cheek, standing up slowly from the edge of the mattress as a cold knot formed in his stomach.

"Mr. Vance? And Ms. Miller?" the nurse asked, her voice carrying the practiced, careful tone of someone delivering delicate news.

"Yes," Sarah answered immediately, her maternal instincts flaring as she pulled the yellow flannel blanket tighter around the infant. "Is something wrong with the baby? His vitals were stable an hour ago."

"The baby’s primary metabolic panel and postnatal screenings are completely normal," the nurse reassured her quickly, offering a tight, professional smile. "He is healthy, strong, and showing all the right reflexes. My concern isn't with the infant at the moment. It’s with your chart, Ms. Miller, and the emergency admission notes filed when you arrived this morning via ambulance."

Ethan took a step closer, his protective instincts overriding his own exhaustion. "What about her chart? She just went through a major medical event. What’s wrong?"

The nurse hesitated, glancing down at the paperwork as if debating how much information she was legally permitted to disclose. "When Ms. Miller was admitted early this morning, her blood work revealed a severe, acute anomaly. Her postpartum hemorrhage risks were initially managed, but subsequent panels show an unexpected, rapid drop in her platelet count, alongside markers indicating a rare systemic reaction we didn't catch during her prenatal file transfers from the city clinic."

Sarah frowned, her brow furrowing in confusion as she clutched her abdomen with her free hand. "I felt fine all morning, aside from the contractions. I thought it was just standard labor fatigue."

"Pregnancy and childbirth can mask underlying conditions that only manifest dramatically under the physical stress of delivery," the nurse explained, stepping closer to the bed and adjusting the intravenous drip line connected to Sarah’s arm. "We’ve already consulted with the attending obstetrician and a hematologist. We need to transfer Ms. Miller up to the intensive care step-down unit for specialized monitoring and potential intervention."

Ethan felt the floor drop out from under him all over again. Just as he had made the monumental, life-altering choice to turn his back on his wedding, his career, and Arthur Sterling’s wrath to claim his family, the universe was threatening to tear that family apart before it had even truly begun.

"Transfer her? To ICU?" Ethan demanded, his voice rising in panic. "Is she in danger? Why wasn't this caught earlier?"

"Mr. Vance, please keep your voice down," the nurse cautioned gently, though her eyes betrayed genuine concern. "Her local prenatal records from the city facility were incomplete. They didn't flag the autoimmune marker that is currently causing her blood panels to crash. We need to move her within the hour."

Sarah looked up at Ethan, her face turning pale as the reality of her medical situation finally sank in. She reached out, her fingers catching the sleeve of Ethan’s tuxedo jacket in a desperate, white-knuckled grip.

"Ethan... the baby," Sarah whispered, her voice trembling for the first time since he had walked into the room. "If I have to go to ICU... I can't keep him in the room with me. They won't allow it in step-down."

Ethan looked down at the tiny infant sleeping peacefully in Sarah’s arms, completely oblivious to the chaos swirling around him. He then looked at Sarah, whose skin had taken on a frighteningly translucent hue under the harsh hospital lights. He realized with terrifying clarity that he was entirely alone, stripped of his wealth, his social standing, and his safety net, standing in a sterile hospital room with a newborn baby and a critically ill woman who depended entirely on him.

"Don't worry," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a fierce, unwavering resolve as he gently placed his hand over Sarah’s cold fingers. "I'm not going anywhere. Whatever happens, I'm staying right here."

Before the nurse could answer, a loud, urgent page echoed over the hospital’s intercom system, followed by the rapid footsteps of medical staff rushing down the hallway outside Room 412.
