Chapter 12

The phone screen glowed harshly in the darkened third-floor recovery room, casting an eerie blue light across Ethan’s exhausted face. He stared at the glowing text message from the unknown number, his thumb hovering over the screen as if touching it might detonate a bomb. The message was short, brutal, and entirely unambiguous: “Arthur Sterling has already filed the injunctions. Your corporate accounts are frozen, your apartment lock has been changed, and Clara’s legal team is preparing a public fraud suit. You have nothing left, Ethan. Surrender the child to our custody by sunrise, or face total ruin.”
Ethan’s breath hitched in his throat. The cold, mechanical efficiency of Arthur’s retaliation was staggering. In less than twelve hours, the billionaire had systematically dismantled every single pillar of Ethan’s adult life, stripping him of his wealth, his housing, his career, and his legal standing. Ethan looked over at the plastic bassinet standing beside his cot. The baby was sleeping peacefully, completely unaware of the monstrous legal and financial storm raging outside the thick glass windows of the hospital.
A heavy, suffocating wave of panic threatened to pull Ethan under. For a fleeting second, his mind raced back to the alternative: what if he did surrender? What if he walked away, let Arthur take the boy, went back to Clara, begged for forgiveness, and reclaimed the multi-million-dollar empire waiting for him outside? It would be so easy. A few apologies, a signature on a document, and his life would instantly return to comfortable, pristine luxury.
He clenched his fists, his fingernails digging deep into his palms until the sharp pain grounded him back in reality. He thought of Sarah, fighting for her life in the ICU step-down unit upstairs. He thought of the tiny, perfect cleft in the baby’s chin—his exact genetic signature. Selling out this innocent life to appease Arthur Sterling would mean trading his own soul for a gilded prison. He wasn't going to break. Not this time.
Ethan tossed the phone onto the nightstand, letting the screen fade to black. He stood up from the cot, walking over to the bassinet to look down at his son. The infant stirred slightly, letting out a soft, bubbling exhale. Ethan reached down, gently sliding his index finger into the baby’s tiny, grasping fist. The infant’s fingers instantly curled around Ethan’s finger with a surprising, unbreakable strength.
"I'm not going anywhere," Ethan whispered fiercely into the quiet room. "I will fight every single lawyer, every single dollar, and every single threat. You are mine, and I am yours."
Suddenly, the heavy wooden door of the recovery room clicked open, and a tall, imposing figure stepped into the dim light. It wasn't a nurse, and it wasn't a doctor. It was Michael, still wearing his rumpled groomsman tuxedo, looking pale, exhausted, and deeply conflicted as he closed the door softly behind him.
"Michael?" Ethan asked, straightening up instantly, his defensive instincts flaring. "How did you find me here? Did Arthur send you to finish the job?"
May you like
Michael held up both hands in a gesture of surrender, his eyes darting nervously toward the bassinet before locking onto Ethan’s hardened gaze.
"Arthur didn't send me, Ethan," Michael said, his voice trembling slightly as he took a cautious step forward. "I came here on my own. And what I have to tell you is going to change everything you think you know about today."
