Chapter 1

Sunlight poured through the stained-glass windows of St. Jude’s Parish, casting brilliant amber and sapphire patterns across the polished oak pews. Ethan Vance stood near the altar, adjusting the crisp lapels of his tailored tuxedo. A small, pristine white rose boutonniere was pinned meticulously to his chest. His heart beat with the steady, familiar rhythm of a man who believed he had entirely mastered his future. Today was supposed to be the culmination of a decade of planning, the official union of two lives that had drifted apart and miraculously found their way back to one another. His phone buzzed softly against his palm. He glanced down, expecting a late text from the caterer or a nervous groomsman. Instead, it was an incoming audio call from Sarah. He swiped the screen, a wide, confident grin spreading across his face as he looked out at the empty rows of waiting guests.
"I’m getting married today," Ethan said, his voice carrying the buoyant, untouchable warmth of a groom who felt completely invincible.
On the other end of the line, the audio was eerily quiet, muffled by the sterile ambient hum of a commercial HVAC system and the distant, rhythmic beep of medical monitors. Sarah’s voice did not carry the fluttery, anxious excitement of a bride sitting in a bridal suite sipping champagne. It was steady, flat, and chillingly devoid of emotion.
"Congratulations, Ethan," Sarah said.
Ethan’s smile faltered, a microscopic crack appearing in his polished exterior. He furrowed his brow, stepping slightly away from the altar to escape the reverberation of his own voice in the cavernous sanctuary.
"Where are you?" Ethan asked, his tone dropping from playful banter into a puzzled, sharp concern. The organist was warming up in the loft, playing soft, meandering chords that felt entirely out of place against the sudden knot tightening in Ethan’s stomach.
Sarah let out a slow, deliberate breath, the sound of fabric shifting heavily against stiff hospital sheets whispering through the speaker.
"The maternity ward," Sarah answered.
Ethan felt the breath evacuate his lungs as if he had been struck squarely in the chest. The shock hit him like a physical blow, scrambling his thoughts and freezing the blood in his veins.

"What did you say?" Ethan demanded, his voice rising dangerously above a whisper, echoing against the stone walls of the holy building.
"Meet your son," Sarah whispered, before the line went completely dead with a sharp click. Ethan stared at the dark screen of his smartphone in absolute, paralyzing disbelief, his entire world collapsing inward.
