Chapter 13
Michael stood in the dim light of the recovery room, his hands trembling slightly as he shoved them into the pockets of his rumpled tuxedo trousers. Ethan remained standing beside the bassinet, his body tense and defensive, shielding the sleeping infant from whatever revelation Michael was about to drop. The hum of the hospital air conditioner seemed to amplify the heavy, suffocating tension hanging in the air.
"You shouldn't be here, Michael," Ethan said coldly, his voice laced with suspicion. "If Arthur finds out you came to see me, your position in his firm will be gone by morning."
"Let it go," Michael muttered bitterly, shaking his head as he pulled up a hard plastic chair and slumped into it, burying his face in his hands for a brief moment before looking up. "Ethan... I didn't come here to threaten you on Arthur’s behalf. I came here because I couldn't live with myself if I kept carrying this lie any longer."
Ethan frowned, crossing his arms over his chest. "What lie, Michael? Speak plainly. What are you talking about?"
Michael let out a shaky, humorless laugh, staring down at the scuffed linoleum floor. "You think today was a spontaneous accident, don't you? You think Sarah miraculously went into labor on the exact morning of your wedding purely by coincidence?"
Ethan’s heart skipped a beat, a cold dread washing over his skin. "What are you trying to say?"
"I’m saying Sarah didn't call you by accident," Michael confessed, his voice dropping to a harsh, remorseful whisper. "And she didn't keep the pregnancy a secret from you for six months just because she wanted to protect herself."
Ethan stepped forward, grabbing the back of Michael’s chair and hauling him upright, his eyes blazing with sudden fury. "Tell me right now, Michael, or I swear to God I will throw you out that window. Who knew about this? Did you know?"
