Chapter 6 - The Silent Alarm

The tiny red light on the underside of the bed rail blinked in rhythmic silence, transmitting an immediate, high-priority alert to the central nurses' station down the hall. Claire didn't notice the subtle movement of Maya's thumb. Instead, she laughed dismissively at Maya's warning, leaning in closer with a predatory smirk.
"Prison? Oh, Maya, you really are delusional from the concussion," Claire mocked, tapping the yellow folder with a manicured nail. "Who is going to believe a battered woman hopped up on painkillers accusing her loving husband and his business partner of a murder plot? Just sign the dotted line and save us all the dramatics."
Maya kept her grip firm on the pen, her heart hammering against her ribs as she listened intently for footsteps in the corridor. Every second stretched like rubber, the silence in the room deafening except for the rhythmic beep of the heart monitor.
Suddenly, the heavy metal door of the hospital room swung wide open.
Dr. Harrison rushed into the room, flanked by two burly hospital security guards in dark uniforms. Their faces were stern, and their hands rested near their utility belts. Claire spun around in shock, her arrogant facade instantly fracturing into pure panic as she realized the trap had sprung.
"Step away from the patient, ma'am," the lead security guard commanded, his voice deep and authoritative as he advanced into the room, blocking the doorway entirely.
Claire stumbled backward, her trench coat rustling as she tried to maintain her composure. "This is a misunderstanding! I'm just a family friend visiting—"
"Visitors are restricted to designated hours, and you are not on Mrs. Miller's approved visitor list," Dr. Harrison interrupted coldly, stepping past Claire to stand beside Maya’s bed. He glanced down at the open yellow envelope and the pen in Maya's hand, then looked up with a knowing nod. "Furthermore, hospital security was alerted the moment an unauthorized individual bypassed the front desk cameras."
Claire’s eyes darted toward the door, calculating her escape route, but the second guard effectively sealed the exit. She sneered at Dr. Harrison, pointing a trembling, gloved finger at him.
"You're making a massive mistake," Claire hissed, her voice rising in pitch. "Ethan will own this hospital by the end of the week. You'll all be begging for jobs!"
"Let him try," Dr. Harrison replied calmly, gesturing for the guards to escort her out.
As the guards grabbed Claire by her arms and marched her struggling, furious form out of the room, she glared back at Maya with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred. The door clicked shut behind them, leaving Maya and Dr. Harrison alone once more in the quiet sanctuary of the room. Maya let out a long, shuddering breath, dropping the pen onto the blanket as the adrenaline finally began to recede, leaving her shaking from head to toe.
"You handled that remarkably well," Dr. Harrison said, picking up the yellow folder and closing it tightly. "But buying time won't be enough. Ethan has legal representation arriving in the morning, and without definitive proof of the tampering, the hospital is legally required to honor his status as your primary next-of-kin."
Maya looked up at the doctor, her eyes burning with exhaustion and a fierce determination. She reached out and grabbed Dr. Harrison’s sleeve, pulling him closer.

"Then we don't have until morning," Maya whispered urgently. "You need to help me smuggle a phone call out of here right now, before Ethan realizes Claire failed."
