Chapter 11 - The Unseen Ally

The bright light from the hallway illuminated the figure standing in the doorway, casting a long, sharp shadow across the room. Maya blinked hard against the sudden glare, her breath catching in her throat as she focused on the man holding the weapon. It wasn't Agent Vance. It was her brother, Lucas, his face hardened into an expression of absolute fury, holding a heavy-duty tactical flashlight in one hand and a concealed-carry pistol in the other.
The masked intruder stumbled back, releasing his grip on Maya’s hospital gown. Maya slid down the wall, gasping for air as pain flared across her bruised ribs.
"Step away from my sister," Lucas commanded, his voice deadly calm, carrying an authority that brooked no argument.
The intruder glanced between Lucas and the open hallway behind him, calculating his escape odds in a fraction of a second. Realizing the element of surprise was completely gone and that hospital security would be swarming the wing within seconds, the masked man lunged toward the open window, smashing his elbow through the glass and scrambling out onto the exterior fire escape.
Lucas didn't fire. Instead, he lowered his weapon slightly and rushed directly to Maya’s side, dropping to his knees on the cold floor.
"Maya! Are you alright? Did he touch you?" Lucas asked, his hands hovering gently as he checked her over for new injuries.
Maya nodded shakily, leaning her head against her brother's shoulder as the adrenaline finally crashed, leaving her shivering uncontrollably. "I'm okay... just bruised. How did you get here so fast, Lucas? I thought you were back across the country."
"I never left," Lucas said grimly, helping her carefully back up onto the hospital bed and pulling the blankets over her shivering frame. "When you called me, I knew Ethan wouldn't act alone. He was always a coward who hired others to do his dirty work. I hired a private security detail to watch your room around the clock, but it looks like someone inside the hospital payroll tipped off our intruder."
Maya’s eyes widened in horror. "Inside the hospital? Who?"
Before Lucas could answer, the overhead lights in the room suddenly buzzed back to life with a sharp click, flooding the space in harsh artificial brightness. At that exact moment, Dr. Harrison rushed through the doorway, looking breathless and disheveled, holding a medical chart tightly against his chest.
"Good heavens! What happened here?" Dr. Harrison exclaimed, his eyes darting to the shattered glass on the floor, the broken window, and Maya’s pale, terrified face. "I heard a commotion from the nursing station! Are you alright, Maya?"
Maya stared at the doctor, her mind racing. Dr. Harrison had been the one to smuggle the burner phone. He had been the one to activate the panic button. But as her eyes scanned his posture, she noticed something chilling: Dr. Harrison’s white coat was entirely clean, despite the heavy dust and shattered glass scattered across the hallway floor outside.
Lucas slowly stood up, placing himself deliberately between Dr. Harrison and the bed, his hand resting casually near his concealed holster.
"Doctor," Lucas said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "The window is broken, the security cameras in this specific wing were manually deactivated three minutes ago, and yet you managed to arrive here instantly without stepping on a single piece of broken glass."
Dr. Harrison stopped dead in his tracks, his professional smile freezing on his face. He looked at Lucas, then slowly turned his gaze toward Maya, whose eyes locked onto his with sudden, terrifying realization.

"You didn't just help us," Maya whispered, her voice trembling as the final, darkest piece of the conspiracy slid into place. "You were running the whole operation from the inside."
