Chapter 10 - The Flickering Light

The sudden loss of light plunged the hospital room into deep, heavy shadows, broken only by the faint, pulsing green glow of the heart monitor. Maya bolted upright, wincing as her bruised ribs protested the sudden movement. She strained her ears, listening intently in the absolute stillness. The steady, mechanical beep of the monitor was the only sound echoing through the room.
Click.
The sound of a heavy shoe scuffing against the linoleum floor near the bathroom door sent a jolt of ice-cold adrenaline straight through her veins.
"Agent Vance?" Maya called out, her voice cracking slightly in the dark.
There was no answer. Only the slow, deliberate sound of breathing—heavier and closer than it should have been.
Maya’s hand groped frantically across the mattress for the emergency call button, but her fingers brushed only empty sheets. The nurse's call button had been disconnected from the wall rail during the federal agents' departure. She was completely isolated, cut off from the rest of the hospital, trapped in a darkened room with an unknown intruder who had bypassed federal security.
A tall silhouette detached itself from the shadows near the bathroom, moving with terrifying stealth toward the bed. The figure stepped into the sliver of moonlight filtering through the window blinds, revealing a man wearing a dark ski mask and heavy leather gloves. He held a syringe in his right hand, the translucent liquid inside glowing faintly under the green light of the monitor.
"Who sent you?" Maya demanded, her voice sharp and devoid of fear, fueled entirely by a fierce, unyielding survival instinct. "Claire is in cuffs! Ethan is arrested! There's no money left for you to collect!"
The masked man didn't speak. He simply advanced toward the side of the bed, raising the syringe with cold, mechanical precision.
Maya didn't hesitate. Gathering every ounce of strength remaining in her battered body, she lunged forward, grabbing the heavy metal pitcher of ice water resting on the bedside table and hurling it directly at the intruder's face.
The glass pitcher shattered against the man's shoulder, sending ice cubes and water splashing across the floor. Cursing loudly, the intruder stumbled backward, momentarily blinded and disoriented.
Maya scrambled toward the opposite side of the bed, throwing her legs over the mattress and hitting the floor with a painful thud. Her bare feet hit the cold tiles as she began crawling frantically toward the heavy oak door.
Just as her fingers brushed against the brass doorknob, a heavy boot slammed down onto her hand, pinning her fingers to the floor with crushing force. Maya screamed out in agony as the masked man hauled her upward by her hospital gown, shoving her violently back against the wall. He pressed the cold, sharp tip of the syringe directly against the side of her neck, his dark eyes glaring down at her through the eyeholes of the mask.
"End of the line, Mrs. Miller," a deep, distorted voice growled in her ear.
Before the needle could pierce her skin, the heavy hospital door crashed open with explosive force, slamming violently into the wall and knocking the intruder off balance.

Standing in the doorway, bathed in the bright fluorescent light of the hallway, was a man holding a heavy service weapon with both hands, his eyes locked onto the masked attacker.
