Chapter 4 - The Missing Evidence

The room fell into an eerie silence once the medical staff departed, leaving Maya alone with her racing thoughts and the steady, mechanical beep of the bedside monitor. She turned her head slowly on the pillow, wincing as the muscles in her neck protested. Her eyes scanned the floor near the base of the bed, searching frantically for the photograph of Ethan and the other woman. It was gone. In the frantic blur of the nurses rushing in during her sudden collapse, the damning piece of evidence had vanished. Had a nurse picked it up and placed it away? Or had someone else entered the room while the medical team fought to keep her alive?
The heavy oak door of her hospital room creaked open an inch. Maya froze, holding her breath as she stared at the gap.
A gloved hand reached around the door frame, gently pushing it open just wide enough for a figure to slip inside. It wasn't a nurse in scrubs, nor was it Dr. Harrison. It was a woman wearing a dark trench coat, her face partially hidden beneath a wide-brimmed hat. She moved with quiet, deliberate precision, stepping soundlessly across the linoleum floor. Maya’s heart hammered against her ribs, the monitor accelerating its pace in response to the sudden spike in her anxiety.
The stranger stopped beside the nightstand, her eyes locking onto Maya with a cold, calculating gaze. Slowly, the woman reached up and removed her hat, revealing sharp features, perfectly styled blonde hair, and a smirk that matched the exact expression from the missing photograph.
"I see you survived the code blue," the woman said, her voice smooth, low, and laced with an unsettling amusement. "Ethan said you were resilient, but honestly, I was beginning to doubt it."
Maya’s blood ran cold. This was the woman from the picture. This was the person helping her husband orchestrate her murder and financial ruin.
"Who the hell are you?" Maya rasped out, her throat dry and burning as she tried to sit up, only to be forced back down by the searing pain in her abdomen.
The woman stepped closer to the bed, resting her leather-gloved hands on the metal guardrail. "My name is Claire. And before you start screaming for a nurse who won't arrive in time, you should know that Ethan and I have been planning this life together for over a year. That car crash wasn't bad luck, Maya. It was a poorly executed first attempt."
Maya stared at Claire in absolute horror, the final pieces of the terrifying puzzle snapping into place. Ethan hadn't just fallen out of love; he had conspired with this stranger to kill her for the insurance payout and her family estate.
"You'll never get away with this," Maya whispered, her eyes burning with newfound fury beneath her bruises. "The police will find out."
Claire laughed softly, a chilling sound that echoed in the sterile room. She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out the missing photograph, dangling it just inches from Maya’s face before slowly tearing it into tiny pieces and letting them flutter down onto the bedspread.

"Police?" Claire smiled wickedly. "My dear, Ethan is the sole beneficiary of your multi-million-dollar life insurance policy, and as your legal husband, he signed off on your do-not-resuscitate order just ten minutes before you coded."
