Chapter 9 - The Final Audit

The heavy thud of combat boots echoed through the minimalist expanse of the penthouse as the four federal marshals moved with swift, practiced precision. Marcus Vance spun around, his eyes widening in sheer panic as he realized escape was no longer an option. The marshals converged on him instantly, their hands gripping his shoulders and forcing him down against the edge of the glass coffee table. The sharp click of steel handcuffs snapping around his wrists shattered the tense silence of the room, mirroring the exact fate Clara had met just hours earlier downstairs.
“Marcus Vance, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy, and corporate embezzlement,” the lead marshal announced, his voice booming authoritatively off the concrete walls.
Marcus let out a muffled curse, his expensive tailored suit twisting awkwardly as he was hauled upright. He cast one final, venomous glare toward Julian, who stood motionless, watching his cousin’s downfall with cold, impassive eyes.
“You’re destroying the family name, Julian!” Marcus shouted over his shoulder as the marshals dragged him forcibly toward the private elevator. “Our grandfather built this dynasty on ambition, not mercy!”
“Our grandfather built this dynasty on honor, Marcus,” Julian replied quietly, though the heavy oak elevator doors slid shut before the words could fully register, cutting off the frantic shouting.
The penthouse returned to a heavy, suffocating silence. The ambient glow of the city lights filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting long, stark shadows across the polished concrete floor. Julian let out a long, slow breath, his chest rising and falling as the adrenaline of the confrontation slowly began to ebb. He walked over to the glass table, picked up the thick leather medical folder, and flipped it open to reveal the final, unredacted financial audits of Vance Enterprises.
Maya stood nearby, watching him carefully with a mixture of professional respect and quiet concern. She reached down and picked up Marcus’s discarded cashmere coat, tossing it neatly over the back of an armchair.
“The federal prosecutor’s office just confirmed receipt of the Zurich transaction logs,” Maya reported steadily, her voice breaking the quiet. “By sunrise, all domestic and international accounts tied to Marcus and Clara will be permanently frozen. Not a single penny of embezzled capital will remain outside government oversight.”
Julian nodded slowly, tracing his thumb over the embossed seal on the folder’s cover.
“Good,” Julian said, his voice low and gravelly. “But freezing their accounts is only the first step. I want a comprehensive forensic audit of every subsidiary, every overseas shipping contract, and every real estate holding acquired over the last three years. If there is even a single trace of compromised integrity anywhere in the corporate structure, I want it excised immediately.”
“Already on it, sir,” Maya replied, pulling her tablet closer and tapping the screen with swift, practiced precision. “Our internal compliance team has been executing parallel audits since midnight. The board members who resigned tonight have already had their company-issued devices remotely wiped and locked.”
Julian walked back over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out at the vast, sprawling expanse of the metropolis below. The city was still asleep, unaware that the financial earthquake shaking its foundations had been orchestrated by a man they had written off as broken and powerless. He looked down at his right hand, flexing his fingers against the heavy gold signet ring. The metal felt cool against his skin, a grounding reminder of the immense responsibility he now bore alone.
“Maya,” Julian said without turning around.
“Yes, Mr. Vance?”
“What is our schedule for tomorrow morning?”
“At 9:00 AM sharp, you have an emergency press conference scheduled at the global headquarters,” Maya recited smoothly, reading directly from her encrypted calendar. “Every major financial publication, broadcast network, and institutional investor will be in attendance. The media is already spinning the story of your miraculous recovery, but they don't know about the criminal arrests yet.”
Julian turned around, a slow, resolute smile touching his lips.
“Then we give them the complete truth,” Julian said quietly. “Every single detail.”
He turned back to the window as the first pale streaks of dawn began to bleed across the eastern horizon, painting the sky in cold shades of gray and gold. The war for his empire was won, but the rebuilding process was about to begin under the blinding glare of the morning sun.

Suddenly, his phone buzzed violently against the glass table, displaying an incoming video call from an unrecognized international number originating directly from Geneva.
