Chapter 6 - The Unseen Benefactor

The private elevator ascended smoothly, carrying Julian Vance away from the suffocating pressure of the ballroom and up toward the quiet sanctuary of the penthouse suite. The soft hum of the cables was the only sound accompanying him and Maya as the city skyline unfolded outside the transparent glass walls, a vast grid of neon and shadows stretching out into the dark American night. Julian stared at his phone screen, the blue light illuminating the sharp angles of his jaw and the cold determination in his dark eyes.
The encrypted message on his display glowed with a single line of text: “Clara was merely the pawn, Julian. The board was playing a much larger game, and the true owner of your offshore accounts has just landed at JFK.”
Julian’s thumb hovered over the screen. He scrolled down, revealing an attached financial transfer log showing millions of dollars moving from a shell corporation in Zurich directly into a personal account held by someone Julian had trusted with his life since childhood—his cousin, Marcus Vance.
A muscle twitched in Julian’s jaw. The betrayal ran far deeper than he had initially calculated. Clara was arrogant, impulsive, and greedy, but she lacked the financial acumen and global connections required to engineer a hostile corporate takeover of this magnitude on her own. Marcus had been the architect; Clara had simply been the willing demolition crew.
“Maya,” Julian said, his voice cutting through the quiet hum of the elevator car.
“Yes, sir?” Maya replied instantly, stepping forward and adjusting her grip on the leather medical folder.
“Forget the local board members for a moment,” Julian said, turning the phone so she could see the glowing Zurich routing numbers. “Pull every communication record between Clara Sterling and my cousin Marcus over the last eighteen months. I want every text, every encrypted chat, and every private flight manifest.”
Maya’s eyes widened slightly as she read the incoming data stream. A look of sharp realization crossed her face.
“Marcus Vance?” Maya whispered. “The executive director of Vance International in London? But everyone thought he was stranded abroad due to his own health issues.”
“Marcus has never been sick a day in his life,” Julian replied bitterly, a dark shadow passing over his features. “He learned from our grandfather that the best way to conquer an empire is to let everyone think you are too weak to hold a sword. He used Clara’s ambition to do his dirty work while he waited safely across the Atlantic.”
The elevator bell chimed softly, signaling their arrival at the top floor. The doors slid open to reveal a sprawling, minimalist penthouse overlooking the glittering expanse of the city. The space was dark, quiet, and completely untouched by the chaos unfolding downstairs.
Julian stepped out onto the polished concrete floor, his leather shoes clicking with authority. He unbuttoned the top of his champagne-stained tuxedo shirt, tossing the jacket onto a designer armchair without a second glance. The illusion of his paralysis was gone, but the physical danger he now faced had multiplied tenfold. Marcus wasn’t just a disgruntled relative; he was a ruthless strategist who possessed full access to international capital markets and deep-rooted cartel-adjacent corporate networks.
“If Marcus just landed at JFK,” Maya said, following him closely into the dim living area and laying the leather folder down on the glass coffee table, “that means he expects to arrive at the emergency board meeting tomorrow morning to claim the CEO position by default.”
Julian walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out at the distant lights of the private airfield across the bay. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy gold signet ring—the traditional emblem of the Vance family patriarch, which he had kept hidden away since the day of his staged accident.
“Let him come,” Julian murmured, sliding the heavy ring back onto his right index finger with a satisfying click. “We’re going to give him a very warm family reunion.”

Before Maya could respond, the private security intercom near the entrance chimed sharply, signaling an unauthorized override at the penthouse’s secure rooftop helipad.
