Chapter 5 - Handcuffs and Velvet

The cold, metallic click of steel handcuffs snapping around Clara Sterling’s wrists sounded like a gunshot in the cavernous silence of the Grandview Ballroom. Clara let out a sharp, choked cry as the federal marshal pulled her arms behind her back with practiced efficiency. The sparkling silver sequins of her high-slit designer gown caught the flashing red and blue lights pouring through the tall windows, casting an eerie, chaotic glow over her tear-streaked face. Her meticulously applied makeup was ruined, black mascara running in dark tracks down her flushed cheeks as she glared back at Julian one last time with pure, unadulterated hatred.
“You won’t get away with this, Julian!” Clara shrieked, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings as the marshals guided her toward the arched double doors. “I’ll ruin you! I’ll tear everything you built down to the ground from the inside out!”
Julian did not flinch, nor did he offer a single parting word. He simply watched her disappear down the grand hallway, her high heels clicking frantically against the marble in a desperate, losing rhythm. The heavy oak doors swung shut behind the officers, sealing her fate and cutting off the muffled sounds of her protests.
The ballroom remained suspended in a suffocating hush. The elite guests, who had spent the entire evening whispering behind their hands and sipping expensive wine at Clara’s expense, now avoided Julian’s gaze entirely. They stared intently at their shoes, their champagne flutes, or the intricate plasterwork on the ceiling, suddenly acutely aware of their own complicity in the social hierarchy that had just collapsed around them.
Julian turned slowly away from the doors, running a hand through his damp, champagne-matted dark hair. The tension in his broad shoulders remained, but a profound, long-overdue sense of release washed over his features. He looked down at the empty motorized wheelchair sitting a few feet away—the prop that had served as his armor, his shield, and his silent observer for six grueling months.
Maya stepped closer, handing him a clean white linen towel she had brought along with the medical folder.
“Your car is waiting in the private subterranean garage, sir,” Maya said quietly, her voice softening as the chaotic energy of the room began to recede. “The board members who voted in favor of Clara’s restructuring plan have already submitted their resignations via email. Vance Enterprises is entirely under your control again.”
Julian took the towel, wiping the sticky residue from his face and hands. He tossed the damp fabric onto the empty seat of the wheelchair, a symbolic burial of the weakness he had been forced to project.
“Resignations aren’t enough, Maya,” Julian replied, his voice low and steady. “Every single board member who accepted a bribe to freeze my medical records needs to be audited down to their last penny. I want a complete cleansing of the executive ranks before the markets open on Monday morning.”
“Consider it done,” Maya nodded, her eyes sharp and focused. “I’ve already dispatched the legal team to secure the corporate servers.”
Julian nodded, turning his back on the silent crowd of former friends and opportunistic acquaintances. He walked toward the private elevator at the rear of the ballroom, his stride powerful, balanced, and completely unhindered. He didn’t look back once. He pressed the penthouse button, stepping into the sleek glass car and leaving the superficial world of high-society backstabbing far below.

As the elevator doors slid shut, cutting off the dim, glittering lights of the ballroom, Julian checked his phone. A new, encrypted notification flashed across the OLED screen—an unknown sender, containing a single financial routing number and a chilling warning about the true mastermind behind Clara’s corporate takeover.
