Chapter 10 - The Geneva Connection

The persistent buzzing of Julian’s phone against the glass table cut sharply through the quiet dawn air. Maya glanced at the screen, her brow furrowing deeply as she read the incoming caller ID. The encrypted signal traced directly back to a secure financial server located deep within Geneva, Switzerland—the exact hub where Marcus and Clara had routed their illicit offshore transactions.
Julian stepped away from the window, his heavy footsteps echoing across the polished concrete floor. He picked up the device, his dark eyes narrowing as he stared at the flashing red indicator light. Without a moment of hesitation, he swiped the screen and tapped the speakerphone icon.
“Speak,” Julian commanded, his voice carrying the absolute authority of a man who had just dismantled two high-level conspirators without blinking.
For a few seconds, there was only static and the low, mechanical hum of an international data line. Then, a voice broke through the silence—smooth, cultured, and unnervingly calm, carrying a faint European accent that sent a cold shiver down Maya’s spine.
“Good morning, Mr. Vance,” the voice purred smoothly. “I must confess, your little performance at the Grandview Ballroom last night was quite spectacular. Few men possess the theatrical stamina to feign permanent paralysis for half a year just to watch their enemies bury themselves.”
Julian did not flinch. He leaned back slightly against the edge of the glass table, crossing his arms over his chest.
“You have exactly ten seconds to identify yourself and state your business before I instruct federal cyber-command to trace this call straight to your physical terminal and dispatch a tactical team,” Julian replied, his tone chillingly level.
A low, soft chuckle echoed through the phone’s speaker.
“Threats are so unbecoming of a newly reinstated billionaire, Julian,” the voice replied, entirely unfazed. “My name is Viktor Vance. Or, if you prefer formalities, your late grandfather’s primary international trustee.”
Maya gasped softly, covering her mouth with her hand. Viktor Vance was a name whispered in hushed tones across European banking circles—a legendary, shadowy figure rumored to have controlled the family’s oldest and most dangerous offshore assets since the Cold War. Most of the corporate board believed Viktor was merely a corporate myth, a ghost story invented to scare rival conglomerates.
“Viktor died in Zurich ten years ago,” Julian said, his voice narrowing into a dangerous squint. “His estate was probated, and his accounts were dissolved under strict international supervision.”
“People in my line of work rarely die, Julian. We simply relocate,” Viktor’s voice replied smoothly. “And as for your grandfather’s true estate, neither Marcus nor Clara ever scratched the surface of what was actually hidden in the Geneva vaults. They stole pocket change while you were busy fighting ghosts.”
Julian’s grip on the phone tightened until his knuckles turned white. The realization hit him like a physical blow: the hostile takeover wasn’t just a family coup orchestrated by an ungrateful cousin and a greedy socialite. It was a calculated stress test designed by the old guard to see if Julian was truly fit to inherit the entire global empire, or if he would crumble under the weight of betrayal.
“So this was all a test,” Julian said quietly, the anger burning hot and steady behind his dark eyes. “You engineered the medical board’s complicity. You fed Marcus the security override codes. You orchestrated the entire trap.”
“I merely provided the environment, Julian. You built the cage,” Viktor replied smoothly. “And now that you’ve proven your competence by locking up the weak links, it is time for you to meet the real architects of Vance Global.”
Julian stared at the glowing phone screen, his jaw set in rigid defiance.
“Name the time and the place,” Julian said coldly.

“Tomorrow at midnight,” Viktor whispered just before the line went dead with a sharp, robotic click.
