Chapter 6 - The Confession in the Shadows

The piercing cry of the infant filled the room, washing away the suffocating tension that had gripped the medical staff just moments before. The resident let out a visible sigh of relief, lowering the laryngoscope and quickly adjusting the oxygen mask over the baby’s tiny face.
"He's stabilizing," the resident announced, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead with the back of his gloved hand. "The fluid is cleared. Keep him on low-flow oxygen for the next hour just to be safe. Good catch getting him turned in time."
Sarah slumped back against her pillows, pressing her palms to her eyes as tears streamed freely down her pale cheeks. She didn't say a word, but her shoulders heaved with the delayed shock of a mother who had nearly lost her newborn child within hours of his first breath.
Ethan let out a long, shaky breath he felt like he had been holding since he stepped foot inside the hospital. He turned around slowly, looking for Chloe. The space near the door was empty. The white wedding dress was gone, leaving behind only a single, crushed white rose petal that had fallen from his lapel during the commotion.
"She’s gone," Ethan murmured, his voice hollow.
Sarah lowered her hands, looking up at him with red, swollen eyes. "She was never really here, Ethan. Not in the way that matters."
Ethan walked slowly toward the bassinet, staring down through the clear plastic barrier at his son. The baby had a tuft of dark hair and tiny, perfect fingernails that curled into microscopic fists. A wave of profound, terrifying love washed over him, completely overriding the lingering panic of his ruined wedding day. This was real. This was flesh and blood, completely untainted by corporate boardrooms or high-society expectations.
"I’m sorry," Ethan whispered, reaching out to gently touch the baby’s tiny, blanket-wrapped foot. "I should have been here from the start. I shouldn't have let things get this far."
Sarah shifted in her bed, pulling the blanket higher over her shoulders. "You stayed away because you were afraid of failing, Ethan. But running away from your past doesn't make it disappear. It just waits for you at the altar."
"What am I going to do now?" Ethan asked, finally lifting his gaze to meet hers. "My life out there is completely destroyed. Chloe’s father owns half the city; he’s going to strip me of everything I’ve built over the last three years."
Sarah offered a faint, tired smile, one that held the quiet wisdom of a woman who had survived winters with nothing more than firewood and hope. "You didn't have anything worth keeping anyway. Not if it cost you your soul."

Before Ethan could reply, the door clicked open. A heavy-set man in a rumpled gray suit stepped into the room, holding a manila folder under his arm. He looked at Ethan with cold, unforgiving eyes.
