Chapter 2 - The Empty Nursery

The sterile scent of antiseptic and bleach replaced the sweet fragrance of roses the moment Ethan burst through the automatic sliding glass doors of City General Hospital. He was still wearing his tailored dark tuxedo, the black bow tie slightly askew, and a crushed white rosebud pinned to his lapel. Passersby stared in absolute disbelief, whispering behind cupped hands as a frantic groom sprinted past the emergency triage desk.
"Sir! You can't run in the hallways!" a security guard shouted, stepping into Ethan’s path.
Ethan didn't slow down. He shoved past the guard with a muttered apology, his breath coming in ragged gasps. He checked room numbers frantically, his mind racing back to the calm, steady voice of Sarah over the phone just minutes before. She had sounded so impossibly serene while holding their child, contrasting sharply with the chaotic storm he had just left behind at the church.
He reached the end of the corridor, his polished leather shoes squeaking loudly against the waxed linoleum floor. Room 412. The door was half-open, a sliver of warm, fluorescent light spilling out into the dim hallway. Ethan stopped dead in his tracks, his hand hovering over the cold metal handle. His pulse thrummed loudly in his ears, drowning out the ambient hospital sounds of rolling carts and distant beeping monitors.
Slowly, he pushed the door open. The movement made a soft, clicking sound that seemed deafening in the quiet room.
Sarah sat propped up against a pile of stiff white pillows. She was wearing a faded cotton hospital gown, her dark hair pulled back into a loose, messy ponytail. Cradled securely in her arms was a tiny bundle wrapped tightly in a blue-striped receiving blanket. She didn't look angry; she didn't look triumphant. She simply looked tired, profoundly peaceful, and entirely resolute.
"You actually came," Sarah said softly, her voice barely louder than a whisper, lifting her chin to meet his wide, terrified eyes.
May you like
Ethan took a hesitant step into the room, his throat completely dry. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. Before he could process the sheer gravity of the moment, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed from down the hallway behind him. A familiar, furious voice pierced the air, calling his full name with chilling menace.
