Chapter 5 - The Monitor’s Alarm

The piercing tone of the heart monitor sliced through the heavy tension in the room, turning everyone’s attention instantly toward the bed. Sarah gasped, her face instantly draining of all color as she looked down at the tiny infant in her arms. The baby’s lips had taken on a faint, terrifying blue tint, and its weak cries had degraded into pathetic, silent gasps for air.
"Nurse!" Sarah screamed, her voice cracking with sudden, unadulterated terror. She hoisted the baby up against her shoulder, patting its back frantically with trembling hands. "Somebody, please, help us! Ethan, do something!"
Ethan lunged forward, shoving past Chloe without a second glance. He slammed his palm against the emergency call button on the wall, holding it down as the red light flashed furiously. "Where are they?" he yelled into the empty hallway. "Get a doctor in here right now!"
Chloe stood frozen against the wall, her white gown pooling around her ankles like sea foam on a rocky shore. The petty anger that had consumed her moments ago evaporated, replaced by the horrifying reality of a dying child. She watched helplessly as Ethan leaned over the bed, pressing his hands gently against Sarah’s shoulders to steady her as she tried to clear the infant's obstructed airway.
"Turn him over, Sarah—tilt his head down!" Ethan instructed, his voice shaking violently.
The door burst open and two nurses rushed into the room, followed closely by a young resident carrying a portable resuscitation kit. The chaotic energy of medical professionalism instantly took over the small space. One nurse gently pulled Sarah back against the pillows while the resident scooped the infant out of her arms, placing the tiny body onto the rolling bassinet beneath the bright overhead examination lamp.
"What’s his APGAR?" the resident barked, pulling a stethoscope from his pocket and pressing it against the baby’s chest.
"It’s dropping fast!" the nurse responded, her hands flying across the monitor controls. "He’s aspirating amniotic fluid. We need to intubate immediately!"
Ethan grabbed the metal rail of the bed, his knuckles turning pure white. He looked at Sarah, whose face was buried in her hands as silent, wracking sobs finally tore through her chest. The wedding, the tuxedo, the expensive reception waiting across town—everything had vanished into absolute insignificance. There was only this room, this breath, and the fragile life fading away on the metal table.

Just as the resident reached for the tiny laryngoscope, the baby let out a loud, angry, healthy wail that echoed off the tiled walls.
