Chapter 4 - The Forgotten Past

The harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital room seemed to hum with unbearable intensity as silence settled over the small space. Chloe stood rigidly by the bed, her white wedding dress looking tragically out of place against the drab medical equipment. Her chest rose and fell in rapid succession as she waited for an answer, her eyes darting between Ethan’s guilt-ridden face and Sarah’s calm, unblinking gaze.
"Explain what?" Chloe demanded, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Ethan, tell me she’s lying. Tell me this is some sick prank orchestrated by your business rivals."
Ethan swallowed hard, the taste of ash in his mouth. He looked down at his polished shoes, noticing a small scuff mark on the toe—a permanent souvenir from his frantic sprint down the corridor. "She’s not lying, Chloe," he confessed, the words tasting like poison. "Before I met you... before I moved to the city and started working at your father's firm... Sarah and I were together. For five years."
Sarah stroked the baby’s soft head, her thumb gently tracing the infant's tiny cheek. "We built a life in the valley, Chloe," she added, her tone devoid of malice, carrying only the heavy weight of shared history. "We bought land. We planted an orchard. And then, when the business went under and the debt piled up like snow, Ethan packed a single suitcase and told me he was going to the city to find a way out for us."
"That’s a lie!" Chloe shouted, though the conviction in her voice was beginning to crack. She turned to Ethan, grabbing the lapel of his expensive tuxedo. "You told me you had never been in love before! You told me I was the first person who ever truly mattered to you!"
"I was a coward," Ethan said, his voice cracking slightly. He looked into Chloe’s tear-filled eyes, seeing the exact moment her idealized version of him shattered into a million irreparable pieces. "I wanted a way out of the poverty I grew up in. Your father offered me a partnership, an inheritance, and a clean slate. I took it. I buried my old life so deeply I actually convinced myself it never happened."
Chloe slowly released his lapel, taking a staggering step backward until her back hit the opposite wall. Her hands hovered over her mouth, her breath catching in her throat. "You used me," she whispered, the realization hitting her like a physical blow. "My entire wedding... it was built on a foundation of lies."

Before Ethan could answer, the heart monitor beside the bed suddenly let out a long, continuous, high-pitched beep. Sarah’s calm demeanor vanished instantly as the baby in her arms began to turn dangerously blue.
