Chapter 6: Fractured Trust

Julian walked past Victoria without looking at her, stepping toward the corner of the room where Elena stood. His expression was a mix of overwhelming gratitude and profound shame. He reached out, his hand hovering uncertainly before resting gently on Elena’s wet shoulder.
"I am so sorry, Elena," Julian said, his voice thick with emotion. "I should have known. I know your heart. I know how much you care for Leo."
Elena nodded slowly, unable to meet his eyes right away. "Thank you, Julian," she murmured. "I just... I couldn't let anything happen to him. He’s like family to me."
Victoria crossed the room, her heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor. The vulnerability she had shown a moment ago was gone, replaced by a defensive, icy fury. "Don't be dramatic, Julian!" she hissed, her voice sharp. "She saved the baby, fine! I'll give her a bonus, I'll write her a glowing recommendation, we can pay for her clothes to be dry-cleaned. But she cannot stay here after this."
Julian whipped his head around, staring at his wife as if seeing her for the very first time. "Stay here? Victoria, a venomous snake nearly bit our son because you were too busy scrolling through your phone to watch him! And your first instinct when Elena saved his life was to throw her under the bus to protect your own ego?"
"My ego?" Victoria shrieked, her voice finally losing its controlled polish. "She's an employee, Julian! She caused a scene, she ruined our patio furniture, she’s standing in our house dripping wet making me look like a negligent mother!"
"You were a negligent mother!" Julian shouted back, the suppressed tension of months finally snapping.

Little Leo, startled by the raised voices, let out a soft cry from the bassinet. Julian immediately dropped his argument, rushing over to soothe his son, rocking the white blanket gently against his chest until the infant quieted down.
Elena quietly slipped out the side door of the den, heading toward the staff quarters down the hall. She didn't want to witness the wreckage of their marriage. She only wanted to ensure the baby was safe for the remainder of the night.
