Chapter 4: The Unseen Danger

Julian leaned closer to the monitor, his eyes narrowing as the video played out in real-time. On screen, Victoria placed her teacup on the small iron table near the pool edge. She turned her back to the water, checking her phone while Elena busied herself adjusting the blanket around the sleeping infant in the stroller.

For a minute, the footage showed ordinary domestic tranquility. Then, a subtle shift occurred on the screen.

Elena watched the monitor intently. "Look at the corner of the fence," she whispered, pointing a trembling finger at the glass.

On the video feed, a dark shape detached itself from the heavy ivy climbing the wooden back fence. It was small, fast, and moved with a low, slinking gait. Julian paused the playback, the pixelated image freezing mid-motion. He squinted, leaning his face inches from the high-resolution display.

"What is that?" Julian murmured, his voice losing its defensive edge and replaced by sudden, cold dread.

Victoria turned away from the window, her expression hardening further as she caught sight of the paused frame. "It's a stray cat," she snapped immediately, her voice rising slightly. "Or a raccoon. We live near the greenbelt, Julian. Animals get into the yard all the time. That doesn't justify Elena screaming at the top of her lungs and grabbing my son out of his stroller like a madwoman."

"That is not a raccoon, Victoria," Julian said slowly, his eyes fixed on the screen. He unpaused the video.

On the monitor, the animal stepped into the direct path of the pool light. It wasn't a cat. It was a large, venomous copperhead snake, its patterned scales glinting under the blue LEDs as it slithered purposefully across the stone pavers, heading directly toward the open base of the stroller where the mesh netting had been unzipped.

Julian drew in a sharp breath. The color drained entirely from his face. On the video, the silent movement continued: the snake coiled itself, lifting its triangular head just inches from the lower shelf of the stroller where Leo’s soft toys and spare blankets lay.
