Chapter 1: The Red Eye

The glowing red indicator light on the security camera pulsed steadily against the dark wood siding of the patio wall. It was a silent witness to the chaos unfolding by the shimmering blue water of the backyard pool. Elena knelt on the damp stone pavers, her dark hair slipping out of its tight bun. Her blue maid top and white apron were soaked through, clinging to her skin from where she had stumbled into the shallow end of the pool moments earlier.

Julian stood frozen a few feet away, holding little Leo swaddled tightly in a soft white blanket. The infant slept through the shouting, breathing softly against Julian’s grey button-down shirt. Julian’s mind raced, his eyes darting between Elena’s tear-streaked, devastated face and Victoria standing rigidly by the empty baby stroller. Victoria’s emerald green satin dress caught the harsh light of the underwater pool lamps, casting an eerie emerald glow across her furious features.

"She was trying to take the baby!" Victoria’s voice cut through the damp night air, sharp and accusatory. Her manicured finger remained rigidly pointed at Elena, who shook her head violently, tears blurring her vision.

"No! No! You have to believe me!" Elena sobbed, her voice cracking with pure desperation. She tried to steady her breathing, but the panic was too overwhelming. She looked at Julian, the man who had hired her, the man who trusted her with his son over the past six months. But Julian’s expression was a mask of shock and painful conflict. He looked down at the bundle in his arms, his knuckles turning white where he gripped the cotton fabric.

Elena realized words alone would never sway Victoria, who had never liked having domestic help around anyway. Victoria wanted Elena gone, branded as a criminal, driven away from this house forever. But Elena had not reached for the baby to harm him or steal him. She had lunged forward to save him from a danger Victoria refused to acknowledge.

With trembling fingers, Elena pointed upward toward the unblinking mechanical eye on the wall. "The camera!" she cried out, her voice dropping to a raw, breathless plea. "Check the feed. Please, Julian. Just look at the camera."

Julian blinked, his gaze shifting upward to the lens. The red light pulsed, recording every second of the nightmare.
