Chapter 5: The Lunge

The silence in the den grew heavy, suffocatingly dense. Julian stared at the moving images on the monitor, watching his past self remain utterly oblivious while the danger unfolded mere feet away. On screen, Victoria was still looking down at her glowing phone screen, completely unaware of the deadly reptile gliding silently across the patio stone.
Elena’s actions on the video made sudden, agonizing sense. On the monitor, Elena froze mid-motion, her eyes widening in horror as she spotted the serpent. Without a second thought, she dropped the diaper bag she was holding, launched herself forward across the wet stone, and scooped the swaddled baby out of the stroller just as the snake struck forward into the empty space where the infant's legs had been resting a microsecond prior.
The momentum of the desperate rescue carried Elena past the edge of the patio, tumbling her directly into the shallow end of the pool with the baby held high against her chest to keep him dry. She had scrambled out of the water seconds later, coughing and weeping, only to be met by Victoria whirling around, misunderstanding the scene entirely, and screaming accusations of abduction.
Julian pressed pause again. The image showed the snake coiled defensively near the stroller base, its fangs bared.
Julian slowly turned his head to look at his wife. The shock on his face had hardened into a cold, piercing glare. "A raccoon, Victoria?" he asked, his voice dangerously quiet.
Victoria swallowed hard, her composure slipping for the first time. She took a half-step backward, her hand gripping the edge of the doorway. "I... I didn't see it," she stammered, her usual confident demeanor fracturing. "I was looking at my emails. How was I supposed to know?"

"You didn't see it because you were ignoring your son," Julian said, standing up from his desk so abruptly that his leather chair rolled backward and hit the bookcase with a dull thud. "Elena saved Leo's life. And the moment she did, instead of checking on your child, you started screaming that she was a kidnapper to cover your own negligence."
Elena stood quietly near the door, wiping a final stray tear from her cheek with the back of her wet sleeve. She felt no triumph, only a profound exhaustion settling into her bones.
