Chapter 9 - The White Vapor

"Gas!" the federal agent screamed, pulling a tactical respirator from her belt and snapping it over her face before diving toward the workbench. "Get your shirts over your mouths!"

Clara ripped the hem of her beige button-down shirt, wrapping it tightly around the lower half of Justin's face while coughing violently as the sweet, chemical smell of the aerosol filled the basement.

"Justin, don't stop!" Clara choked out, her vision blurring as the vapor rolled across the floor like a living tide. "Bridge the contacts! Do it now!"

Justin's hands shook uncontrollably, the tiny brass pin hovering inches above the glowing blue circuit board inside the pocket watch. The vapor was thick now, swallowing the yellow light of the hanging bulb and turning the room into a hazy, nightmarish void.

Miller fired three wild rounds up the basement stairs toward the doorway, the muzzle flashes cutting brilliant arcs through the white smoke, but a heavy armored boot slammed onto the landing overhead, kicking the empty shell casings back down into the room.

"Federal Security! Surrender the device and step away from the child!" a distorted voice amplified through a tactical megaphone boomed from the top of the stairs.

"We're dead either way if they get that switch!" Henderson shouted, collapsing against the server rack as the gas took hold of his frail lungs. "Justin, bridge it! Now!"

With a cry of sheer determination, Justin jammed the brass pin across the micro-contacts.

A sharp, high-pitched acoustic whine cut through the room, so loud and piercing that it shattered the remaining glass in the basement windows. The blue light inside the pocket watch flared into an blinding supernova, casting jagged shadows across the concrete walls.

For a fraction of a second, the humming server racks died. The alarms stopped. The heavy white vapor froze in mid-air as if caught in amber.

Then, every single electronic device within a mile—the surveillance drones, the tactical radios, the secret black vans, and the streetlights overhead—exploded simultaneously in a cascade of brilliant blue sparks.

Absolute, profound silence reclaimed the neighborhood.

Clara dropped to her knees, pulling Justin into her arms as the smoke slowly cleared to reveal a smoking crater where the front lawn used to be.

Justin opened his small palm. The silver pocket watch had melted completely into a smooth, blackened lump of slag, but etched into the cooling metal on his palm was a set of GPS coordinates pointing directly toward the center of the nearby forest.
