Chapter 12 - The Architect's Confession

"You're late," Dr. Aris Thorne said without turning around, his voice echoing smoothly through the cavernous subterranean vault. He wore a rumpled tweed jacket, and his gray hair was disheveled, but his posture was completely relaxed.
Miller stepped forward, keeping his pistol leveled at the back of the cryptographer's head. "Hands where I can see them, Thorne. You're under arrest for high treason and mass endangerment."
Thorne let out a dry, humorless chuckle, slowly swivel his chair around to face them. He didn't look like a terrified fugitive; he looked like a weary professor addressing a classroom of slow students.
"Treason? Arrest?" Thorne smiled faintly, his eyes drifting past Miller to land squarely on Justin. "My dear Detective, you can't arrest a gardener for planting seeds in spring. It's the most natural thing in the world."
"You weaponized an entire suburban neighborhood," Clara shouted, stepping past Miller with pure fury burning in her eyes. "You used my twelve-year-old son as a mule to carry your encrypted payload into every home on Maple Street!"
"I didn't use him, Mrs. Hayes. I recruited him," Thorne corrected smoothly. "Children understand systems much better than adults do. They don't see boundaries, property lines, or military clearances. They just see puzzles waiting to be solved."
Justin looked down at his sneakers, the synthetic grass filaments still clinging to the rubber soles. "You said it was a video game."
"It is a game, Justin," Thorne said softly, leaning forward with an intense, hypnotic gleam in his eyes. "The old world of governments, borders, and nuclear standoff is dead. It's bloated, corrupt, and fragile. Project Greenlawn is the replacement. A self-sustaining, decentralized defense grid that protects itself, feeds itself, and heals itself."
"By turning every lawn into a military relay and blowing up half a town?" Miller demanded, keeping his weapon steady.
"Collateral calibration," Thorne dismissed with a wave of his hand. "The old grid had to be pruned to allow the new one to take root. And your son's pocket-watch stunt didn't destroy my network, Detective. It finished the handshake protocol."
The federal agent gasped, stepping backward as she stared at the massive overhead monitor. The red pulsing lights across the Eastern Seaboard map had suddenly solidified into a single, unyielding solid line that encircled every major military installation from Washington to Boston.
"The handshake is complete," Thorne whispered with a chilling smile. "The system is fully autonomous now. And the kill-switch isn't a button... it's a heartbeat."

Before anyone could react, the heavy steel blast doors at the top of the stairwell slammed shut with a deafening crash, and the vault's entrance locks engaged automatically from the outside.
