Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Suspicion

"Ma'am, is your son the boy who's been mowing lawns around here?"
The male officer's voice cut through the quiet afternoon air, sharp and unyielding, bouncing off the peeling white paint of the porch.
"Yes. Is something wrong?"
Clara tightened her grip on the wooden doorframe, her knuckles turning bone-white as she stared at the two uniformed figures standing on her welcome mat.
"Everything is wrong, Mrs. Hayes," the female officer interjected, stepping forward with a ledger tucked tightly under her arm. "We need to talk about what Justin has been leaving behind in those yards."
"Justin is twelve years old, he cuts grass for twenty bucks, and he's inside doing his homework!" Clara snapped back, her voice rising in defensive panic. "You can't just show up here making vague accusations without a warrant or an explanation!"
"We aren't here about his grades, ma'am," the male officer said, his tone dropping into a dangerous, icy register that made the hair on the back of Clara's neck stand up. "We're here about the encrypted memory cards, the stolen security footage, and the missing defense contractor who hired him last Tuesday."
Clara stared at them, the breath completely leaving her lungs.
"Justin, come downstairs, please," she called out, her voice trembling violently as she turned toward the dark hallway.
A moment later, Justin appeared on the wooden landing, wearing his green t-shirt and blue shorts, blades of dried grass still clinging stubbornly to the rubber of his sneakers. He looked down at the police officers, his young face a mask of utter confusion.
"Mom, what's happening?" Justin asked softly, taking a hesitant step down the stairs.

As the boy reached the bottom step, the male officer reached into his utility belt, pulled out a pair of heavy steel handcuffs, and snapped them onto the terrified child's thin wrists before Clara could even scream.
