Chapter 14 - The Root Directory

The cavernous vault vibrated violently as the mainframe console shrieked a high-frequency digital chord that rattled the very fillings in their teeth. The synthetic grass vines on the floor writhed like living serpents, climbing the legs of the server racks and wrapping around Dr. Thorne's ankles before he could take a single step backward.

"What is this? Get this off me!" Thorne panicked, his calm facade instantly shattering as the emerald vines tore through his tweed trousers and pierced his skin with thousands of microscopic needles.

"You built a system that feeds on biological hosts, Thorne," the federal agent shouted over the deafening hum of the servers, grabbing a heavy metal wrench from a nearby toolbox and bringing it down on the vines binding the scientist's legs. "You just forgot to check who the administrator was!"

Justin stood completely rigid in the center of the room, his eyes glowing with a faint, pulsing amber light that mirrored the overhead map. He wasn't crying anymore. His expression was completely blank, serene, and terrifyingly detached.

"Justin! Look at me!" Clara sobbed, grabbing his small shoulders and shaking him gently. "Fight it, baby! Come back to me!"

The boy turned his head slowly, looking down at his mother with a gaze that felt ancient and impossibly vast. "I can see everything, Mom. I can see every lawn, every street, every satellite in the sky. They aren't machines. They're just growing."

"Shut it down, Justin!" Miller yelled, aiming his weapon at the main server bank. "If you have admin access, you can kill the power!"

Justin raised his right hand, his fingers twitching in rhythm with the pulsing amber lights on the console. "If I kill the power, the network dies. But if the network dies, the safety protocols fail, and the old defense grid launches every nuclear missile in the silo network within sixty seconds."

The room plunged into dead, stunned silence. Dr. Thorne slumped against the console, his breathing shallow as the synthetic vines drained his adrenaline.

"He's right," Thorne whispered, coughing up a drop of blood. "The transition is irreversible. The boy has to choose which world burns."

Clara looked down at her son, seeing the twelve-year-old boy who just wanted to earn twenty dollars mowing lawns trapped inside a godlike intelligence holding the fate of humanity in his small hands.

"Choose us, Justin," Clara whispered, tears streaming down her face as she kissed his forehead. "Choose your mom."

Justin closed his eyes, took a deep, shuddering breath, and slammed his palm directly onto the master override key on the glowing console.
