Chapter 8: The Arraignment

The courtroom of the Federal District Court of New York was packed to capacity. Reporters, financial analysts, and curious onlookers strained their necks as the heavy oak doors opened and Julian Vance was led in by United States marshals. The man who had ruled Vanguard Global from a glass penthouse just twenty-four hours earlier now wore an orange jumpsuit, his wrists shackled, his gaze locked firmly on the polished linoleum floor.
At the prosecution table sat Thomas and Sarah, who had spent the entire night reviewing forensic accounting ledgers with federal investigators. In the front row of the public gallery sat Helen, her hands folded neatly over the strap of her brown cross-body bag. Her breathing was slow, deliberate, and entirely unbothered by the flashing cameras of the press corps.
""All rise for the Honorable Judge Elizabeth Vance,"" the bailiff called out, causing a ripple of murmurs through the courtroom.
Judge Vance—no relation to the corporate dynasty, though sharing the same unyielding demeanor—strode to the bench, her black robes billowing slightly. She adjusted her reading glasses and scanned the initial indictments before looking down at the defense table, where a public defender sat flipping frantically through unread briefs.
""We are here for the arraignment of Julian Vance in the matter of United States versus Vance Enterprises,"" Judge Vance announced, her voice echoing clearly through the vaulted chamber. ""The charges include felony assault, grand larceny, wire fraud, and systemic regulatory violations. How does the defendant plead?""
Julian’s public defender stood up quickly, clearing his throat. ""Your Honor, given the late hour of my appointment and the staggering volume of the prosecution's filings, we request a two-week continuance to enter a plea and discuss bail terms.""
Before the judge could respond, a slender hand raised from the prosecution table. Thomas rose to his feet, buttoning his charcoal suit jacket.
""Your Honor, the government objects to any delay or bail consideration,"" Thomas said smoothly, stepping forward. ""The defendant poses an immediate flight risk. As our forensic audit demonstrates, Mr. Vance has spent the past six months quietly liquidating personal assets into offshore accounts in anticipation of this exact collapse. Furthermore, given his history of violent outbursts—documented clearly in the lobby assault footage currently circulating through federal marshals—releasing him back into the public poses a direct threat to witnesses and victims.""
Judge Vance turned her sharp gaze toward the defense table. ""Counsel? What do you say to the allegations of hidden offshore assets?""
The public defender glanced sideways at Julian, who stood silent, staring blankly at the wall. ""Your Honor... we have no immediate documentation to refute the government's claims at this time.""
Judge Vance slammed her gavel down once. The sharp crack echoed like a gunshot through the silent courtroom.

""Motion for bail denied. The defendant is remanded to federal custody pending trial. Court is adjourned.""
As the marshals grabbed Julian’s arms to lead him back down to the holding cells, he caught sight of his mother in the front row. For a split second, his sharp facial features twisted into a desperate plea for mercy. Helen did not look away. She met his gaze with a calm, unblinking sorrow, watching the doors close behind him as the final chapter of his illusion came to an end.
