Chapter 2: The Weight of Inheritance

The heavy boot of the tactical officer struck the marble floor with a resounding crack, echoing through the cavernous lobby of Vanguard Global Enterprises. Julian stumbled backward, his manicured hands rising defensively as he stared down the barrel of the service weapon. The sheer audacity that had fueled his violent shove vanished, replaced by a cold, primordial terror.
""Step away from the victim. Hands behind your head, now,"" the lead officer commanded, his voice clipped and absolute.
Julian’s mouth opened, but no words came out. He looked wildly around the room, expecting his security detail or his executive board to intervene, but the security guards had vanished into the shadows of the mezzanine, unwilling to cross federal law enforcement.
Helen rose from the floor with slow, deliberate grace. She brushed a stray piece of safety glass from the sleeve of her brown jacket, smoothing the fabric of her green shirt without a single tremor in her hands. Sarah, the junior colleague who had witnessed the assault, rushed forward with a paper towel and a bottle of water, her eyes wide with lingering shock.
""Are you alright, Mrs. Vance?"" Sarah asked, her voice trembling as she offered the water.
""I am quite well, Sarah. Thank you,"" Helen replied softly, taking the paper towel to wipe a speck of dust from her cheek. She did not look at her son, who was now being forced to his knees by two additional officers who had poured through the shattered threshold. The golden cufflinks Julian wore—symbols of his immense wealth and unearned superiority—glinted cruelly under the recessed ceiling lights.
""Mom! What is this? Tell them to leave!"" Julian finally screamed, his voice cracking with panic as the heavy steel cuffs clicked shut around his wrists. ""You can't do this! I run this company!""
Helen paused, turning her head slightly to look down at the man who had forgotten where he came from. ""You run nothing, Julian. You merely occupied a chair that was kept warm for you until you proved entirely unworthy of it.""

The officers hauled Julian to his feet, hauling him toward the private elevators that led down to the subterranean transit bays. As the elevator doors slid shut, cutting off his frantic shouting, the heavy silence of the lobby returned.
Helen adjusted the strap of her brown cross-body bag. She turned to Sarah, whose career hung in the balance of this corporate earthquake. ""Come along, child,"" Helen said gently. ""We have a board meeting to attend.""
