Chapter 5: The Return of the Eldest

Thomas Vance walked into the boardroom with a measured, unhurried stride. He looked remarkably like his mother: calm, observant, and entirely unimpressed by the terrified expressions of the directors. He wore a charcoal three-piece suit, his dark hair touched with silver at the temples.
Arthur Pendelton’s face drained of color. ""Thomas... You’re supposed to be in London. The transatlantic flights don't land until—""
""My mother called me the moment Julian had the security guards block her access card,"" Thomas interrupted smoothly, stopping beside Helen and placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. She tilted her head up, offering him a brief, reassuring smile. ""And private jets tend to bypass commercial scheduling issues, Arthur, especially when the passenger owns the aircraft.""
Beatrice clutched the pearls at her neck. ""This is a coup! You’re manipulating a family dispute to execute a hostile takeover!""
""It is not a takeover, Beatrice, it is a reclamation,"" Thomas said, setting his briefcase on the table and unlatching the brass clasps. He pulled out a thick stack of certified documents, sliding them across the teak surface toward the trembling managing director. ""These are forensic audits covering the last thirty-six months. They detail unauthorized corporate expenditures, shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands under Julian’s personal control, and systemic violations of SEC regulations designed to artificially inflate his performance bonuses.""
Arthur didn't touch the papers. He knew what they contained. He had signed off on half of them under the implicit threat of being fired.
""Julian was aggressive, yes,"" Arthur stammered, his diplomatic facade completely shattered. ""But he delivered quarterly growth! The shareholders—""
""The shareholders are about to receive an emergency dividend funded by the liquidation of the assets Julian embezzled,"" Helen said, her voice cutting through Arthur's excuses like a scalpel. She finally pulled out the chair at the head of the table and sat down, resting her hands flat on the polished wood. ""Furthermore, the foundation is exercising its super-majority voting rights under Clause 14-B of the corporate charter. Every member of this board who signed off on Julian’s unchecked authority is hereby suspended pending a federal investigation.""
Silence descended upon the room once more, heavier and more suffocating than before. Sarah, standing quietly by the door, felt her knees go weak with the realization that history was being rewritten in real-time.
May you like
""You can't do that,"" Beatrice whispered, though the defiance in her voice had completely evaporated.
""We just did,"" Thomas replied, pulling out the chair beside his mother and sitting down. He looked directly at Arthur Pendelton. ""You have ten minutes to clear your desks, Arthur. Security is waiting outside to escort you out through the lobby—past the shattered glass.""
