Chapter 9: The Ring in the Black Walnut

That autumn, on a crisp, golden evening when the full harvest moon rose over the Ozark ridges, Ethan led Clara up the stone trail to the highest limestone bluff overlooking the valley.

A small fire of seasoned red oak was crackling between the rocks, its warm orange light dancing across their faces.

Ethan reached into his wool coat, pulling out a small, hand-carved box made of native black walnut wood.

He placed it in Clara’s hands.

Clara opened the lid.

Inside lay a simple, elegant band hand-carved from seasoned black walnut heartwood salvaged from the reserve’s original 19th-century homestead barn, polished to a silky luster with natural beeswax, inlaid with a microscopic ribbon of native Missouri river copper that caught the firelight like a thin thread of gold.

""In the city, they buy diamonds on credit to prove how much debt they can command, Clara,"" Ethan said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with unconditional devotion. ""In these hills, we shape wood to show that we will stand beside each other through every winter storm until our work on earth is done.""

He took her hand in his, his fingers warm and strong against hers.

""I give you my hands, my work, and my sacred promise to love you, shelter your life, and serve this land beside you for as long as I draw breath.""

Clara looked down at the wooden band, feeling its living grain against her skin.

Her hazel eyes filled with tears of radiant, unshakeable joy.

""Yes, Ethan,"" Clara whispered, throwing her arms around his neck, pulling him close against her heart. ""With all my soul, yes.""
