In late November, the University of Missouri held a special academic convocation in Columbia to dedicate *The Ethan Hale Center for Ecological Regeneration.*
The auditorium was filled with hundreds of scientists, conservation directors, and students from around the world.
Ethan walked to the podium dressed in his simple charcoal wool jacket, carrying the same vintage leather-bound ledger he had laid on the walnut counter in Chicago seven years earlier.
He set the ledger on the oak lectern, looking out over the auditorium with quiet, humble grace.
""We live in an era that often teaches us that wealth is measured by what we can conquer, extract, and commodify,"" Ethan spoke to the assembly. ""We build towering glass monuments and write complex algorithms to shield ourselves from the earth. But this ledger was written on a simpler, older truth: that we are not the masters of this world; we are its caretakers.""
He pointed to the handwritten pages.
""When you take care of the soil, the soil takes care of the children. When you tell the truth, the ground holds you. There is no other foundation that will stand.""
