Chapter 2: The Severed Pretense

The lobby froze in total silence.

Two dozen junior analysts, corporate attorneys, and board members standing near the bronze elevators stopped in their tracks.

Jonathan took a half-step back, his face draining of color until it matched his crisp white collar. ""Evelyn, this is an orchestrated ambush. Ethan abandoned the university laboratory twelve years ago! Croft Biosystems engineered the scalable synthetic delivery vehicles! We hold the patent filings!""

Evelyn Sterling did not look away from the yellowed pages.

""Your synthetic delivery vehicles have poisoned sixty thousand acres of watershed in the Missouri River basin, Jonathan,"" Evelyn said, her voice carrying cleanly across the atrium. ""You replaced Ethan’s natural fungal inoculants with petroleum-derived chemical stimulants to cut production costs by eighty percent so you could report a thirty-million-dollar quarterly profit to Wall Street.""

She turned the ledger toward the two federal regulatory agents who had just stepped through the revolving glass doors.

""As of eight o'clock this morning,"" Evelyn announced, ""the Department of Justice has suspended all federal land-restoration subsidies granted to Croft Biosystems. The master intellectual property rights for the North American Soil Reclamation Framework remain vested exclusively in the public trust established by Ethan Hale.""

Jonathan reached into his breast pocket, his fingers shaking as he grabbed his smartphone. ""I'm calling the senator's office! We have municipal indemnification covenants!""

Ethan looked at Jonathan—not with bitter malice, but with the quiet sorrow one feels when observing a hollow monument that has finally cracked under its own weight.

""The senator’s office has already received the water toxicity reports, Jonathan,"" Ethan said gently. ""The soil doesn't care about your press releases. It keeps its own account, and the debt has come due.""

Ethan closed the heavy leather ledger, tucked it beneath his arm, and walked calmly past the corporate executives toward the glass exit, leaving Jonathan standing in the center of the lobby as the federal marshals presented him with a formal subpoena.
