Chapter 5 - The Badge at the Front Door

The rhythmic pounding on the front door reverberated through the quiet suburban home, freezing every person in the dining room into absolute stillness. Lily whimpered softly in her high chair, tugging nervously at the fabric of her red dress while big tears welled up in her blue eyes. Elena stood paralyzed beside her chair, her hands clenched into tight fists as the reality of the situation crashed down upon her.
"Stay back," David whispered frantically, his eyes darting toward the back window as if calculating the feasibility of a desperate escape. "Don't let them in. If they search this house, they'll find the secondary hard drives in the study."
"Stop acting like a fugitive, David!" Marcus shouted, stepping between his brother and the hallway. "Running will only make it ten times worse. You heard the news—they already have the storage locker. Hiding won't save you now."
Clara Vance remained seated at the head of the table, her posture rigid and unyielding inside her maroon blouse. Despite the police at the door and the crumbling wreckage of her family's reputation, the elderly matriarch didn't look panicked; she looked furious. Her sharp eyes darted toward the disputed check still resting on the polished wood, then flicked over to Maya with a look of pure calculation.
"Let them knock," Clara rasped, her voice cutting through the rising panic like a knife. "Let them tear this house apart from floor to ceiling. But when they find out who actually signed the initial transfer orders for those offshore accounts, none of you are going to like the result."
Maya didn't back down. She met Clara’s scorching glare head-on, stepping closer to the head of the table. "Are you implying what I think you're implying, Mrs. Vance? Because if you signed off on those wire transfers, you're an accessory to federal wire fraud."
"I signed nothing," Clara hissed, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "I merely tolerated your amateurish snooping because I knew you'd eventually stumble onto the truth. But you're looking at the wrong culprit."
Before Maya could demand an explanation, the heavy front door creaked open. The police had evidently decided not to wait for an invitation. Heavy, purposeful footsteps echoed down the hardwood hallway, coming closer with every second.
Elena whirled around to face the archway as two uniformed officers stepped into the dining room, their hands resting cautiously near their utility belts. The lead officer, a tall man with tired eyes and silver-streaked hair, scanned the tense room before locking his gaze onto David.
"David Vance?" the officer asked, his voice steady and professional. "I am Detective Miller. I have a warrant to search this premises and a warrant for your immediate arrest in connection with the embezzlement of Vance Enterprises assets."
David swayed on his feet, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly as the cuffs were pulled from the detective's belt. Elena pressed a hand against her mouth to stifle a sob, the final pillar of her reality collapsing completely.
Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling a folded document from his coat pocket and laying it flat on the table right over the disputed check. "And before anyone else tries to destroy evidence," the detective said, glancing around the room with a knowing smile, "you should all know that Sarah Jenkins is currently cooperating with the federal prosecutor's office. And she brought a signed confession naming the mastermind behind the entire operation."
Maya leaned over to read the top line of the detective's warrant, her breath catching in her throat as she saw the name listed as the primary financial beneficiary of Sarah's trust. It wasn't David. And it wasn't Clara.

It was a name none of them had heard spoken in this house for over twenty years.
