Chapter 1 - The Accusation That Shattered Sunday Dinner

The dining room air grew thick with a suffocating tension that seemed to freeze the very light pouring through the lace curtains. Clara Vance leaned over the polished mahogany table, her knuckles pressing down so hard against the wood that her skin turned stark white. Her silver hair, pulled back into a tight, severe bun, caught the harsh midday glare, framing a face carved from pure indignation.
She fixed her burning gaze on Elena, her middle-aged daughter-in-law, whose hands trembled slightly where they rested beside a lukewarm cup of coffee. Beside Elena, David sat rigidly in his dark button-down shirt, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle ticked uncontrollably near his ear.
"You've taken enough from this family," Clara rasped, her voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register that commanded absolute obedience.
Elena swallowed hard, her shoulders rising defensively inside her green wool sweater. "Clara, please. Not today. Not with the little one in the room."
Across the table, toddler Lily sat trapped in her high chair, wearing a bright red dress that suddenly felt entirely too festive for the heavy gloom descending upon them. The little blonde girl blinked her wide blue eyes, sensing the hostility in the room, and slowly reached out to touch a crisp piece of heavy cardstock resting right in the middle of the dining table. It was a cashier's check, signed in frantic cursive, for an amount that could buy a small house outright.
David finally slammed his palm against the tabletop, the loud crack echoing off the plaster walls and making Lily whimper softly. "Mom, stop it right now! You don't know the whole story, and you have no right to barge in here waving that around!"
Clara didn't flinch. She kept her piercing eyes locked on David, a bitter, humorless smile touching the corners of her thin lips.
"Don't I?" Clara whispered, slowly sliding the disputed check one inch closer to herself with a manicured fingernail. "I know every single dirty secret this house hides."

Before David could lunge forward to grab the document, Maya stepped out from the shadowy kitchen doorway. Clad in a beige knit sweater and clutching a warm mug, Maya stared coldly at Clara and said, "She’s not the only one who knows what you did, David."
