Chapter 2 - The Stranger in the Beige Sweater

Maya’s sudden intervention dropped a dead silence over the room, heavier than the accusation Clara had just hurled. David froze halfway out of his chair, his dark-shirted shoulders suspended in a rigid hunch. He looked at Maya with an expression that crossed rapidly between absolute terror and profound betrayal.

"Stay out of this, Maya," David warned, his voice pitched in a harsh, desperate whisper that barely carried across the table. "This is family business. You have no place here."

Maya took a slow, deliberate step forward into the pool of sunlight, her long dark hair falling over the shoulders of her beige knit sweater. She didn't look at David; instead, her dark eyes remained locked on Elena, who was gripping the edge of the mahogany table so hard her knuckles were turning blue.

"Family business?" Maya echoed, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. "Is that what we're calling grand theft and systematic financial betrayal now? Because from where I'm standing, David, this goes way beyond a simple family dispute."

Elena turned her head sharply toward Maya, her face draining of what little color it had left. "Maya, please. We agreed we were going to handle this privately. Bringing outsiders into this—"

"I am not an outsider!" Maya snapped, her voice cutting through the dining room like a shard of broken glass. She gestured toward the crisp document lying on the table between them. "I’m the forensic accountant you hired three months ago when you started suspecting your husband was bleeding the family estate dry. Remember? Or did the stress of spending stolen money make you forget your own paper trail?"

Little Lily whimpered again in her red dress, picking up on the rising hostility in Maya's tone. Clara Vance let out a low, victorious hum, straightening her posture in her maroon blouse. The elderly matriarch looked down at her son with supreme disappointment, shaking her head slowly.

"You always were the weakest of my children, David," Clara murmured, her voice dripping with venom. "Too weak to build anything of your own, so you resort to stealing your mother's legacy from beneath her feet."

David stared at the floor, the fight seemingly draining out of him all at once. He sank back down into his chair, his shoulders slumping in defeat.

"I didn't steal it for myself," David muttered hoarsely, staring at his wedding band. "I had to do it. You don't know what they were threatening to do to us."

Maya crossed her arms tightly over her chest, stepping closer to the table and leaning down until she was face-to-face with David. "Spare us the melodrama. I traced every single offshore wire transfer. The money isn't gone to pay off shadowy blackmailers. It’s sitting in a brand-new account registered under a name none of us expected."
