Chapter 11 - The Chase in the Dark Woods

The damp pine needles crunched violently beneath Maya’s boots as she sprinted blindly into the pitch-black woods, guided only by the bobbing motion of the distant flashlight ahead of her. The roar of the burning boathouse faded into a dull, echoing background drone, replaced by the heavy, ragged sound of her own breathing and the snapping of dry twigs.
"Stop!" Maya gasped out, clutching her side as a sharp stitch flared in her ribs. "You can't outrun the police!"
The figure in the dark hoodie didn't slow down. If anything, they accelerated, weaving effortlessly between the thick trunks of ancient pine trees as if they knew every inch of this treacherous forest layout by heart.
Maya pushed forward, branches whipping against her face and tearing at the fabric of her beige knit sweater. She crested a small, muddy rise in the terrain, her eyes straining to catch another glimpse of the fleeing stranger. Just ahead, the woods opened up into a neglected gravel clearing where an old, abandoned toolshed stood listing dangerously to one side.
The figure dashed toward the shed, slamming the rotting wooden door open and disappearing inside.
Maya skidded to a halt just outside the threshold, her chest heaving as she tried to catch her breath. The interior of the shed was pitch black, smelling heavily of damp earth, rusted iron, and old gasoline.
"I know you're in there," Maya called out, her voice echoing off the corrugated tin walls. She reached into her pocket, pulling out her phone and flicking on the flashlight feature. The bright beam cut through the darkness, sweeping across old lawnmowers, tangled fishing nets, and dusty tool benches.
At the back of the shed, standing beside an open trapdoor cut directly into the dirt floor, was the figure in the hoodie. They lowered the hood slowly, revealing a cascade of long dark hair.
Maya froze, the breath catching in her throat. It wasn't a stranger.
"You?" Maya whispered, lowering her phone slightly in sheer disbelief.
The woman turned around, holding the charred leather ledger tightly against her chest. In the harsh beam of the flashlight, her face looked calm, cold, and entirely devoid of fear.
"You really should have minded your own business, Maya," Sarah Jenkins said smoothly, stepping backward toward the open trapdoor. "This family's sins go deeper than any ledger can show."
Before Maya could lunge forward to grab her, Sarah dropped the ledger onto the dirt floor, spun around, and plunged headfirst down the subterranean ladder into the darkness below.
Maya rushed to the edge of the trapdoor, flashing her light down into the damp, concrete-lined tunnel that stretched beneath the shed. "Sarah! Come back here!"
From the darkness far below, Sarah's voice echoed back up, chilling and sharp. "You think Arthur is the monster of this story? He's just a puppet. The real strings have been pulled by someone much closer to home."

Before Maya could process the warning, heavy footsteps thudded up behind her outside the shed, and a strong hand gripped her shoulder, spinning her around.
