Chapter 6 - The Tarmac Chase

The cold wind whipped across the tarmac at Teterboro Airport, smelling sharply of jet fuel and damp concrete. Sirens wailed in the distance, their red and blue lights flashing violently against the dark fuselage of a twin-engine Gulfstream private jet idling on the runway. Arthur Vance’s black sedan screeched to a halt fifty feet from the boarding stairs, the tires kicking up loose gravel.

Valeria flung the car door open, her burgundy midi dress swirling around her legs as she stepped out into the freezing night. Beatrice followed close behind, holding her beige trench coat tightly against her chest, while Agent Miller vaulted out of the passenger seat, his hand resting on his service weapon.

"Hold it right there! Federal Aviation Administration and FBI!" Agent Miller shouted into the wind, though his voice was nearly swallowed by the deafening whine of the jet engines spooling up for takeoff.

At the top of the mobile boarding stairs, Julian Montgomery froze mid-step. He wore his gray suit jacket over a rumpled beige dress shirt, his light brown hair whipped wildly across his face. Beside him, Elena stood clutching her white handbag with white-knuckled desperation, her elaborate burgundy dress entirely unsuited for the freezing airstrip weather. She looked down at the federal agents and Arthur Vance with a mask of sheer, unadulterated panic.

"Julian! Turn around and step down the stairs right now!" Valeria’s voice rang out, clear, piercing, and devoid of any hesitation. She walked deliberately toward the base of the stairs, her chin held high. "You can run to Zurich, Julian, but Meridian Holdings is a federal racketeering case. They don't have extradition treaties for white-collar theft that crosses state infrastructure lines using forged signatures."

Julian looked back toward the open cabin door, where the pilot was frantically motioning for him to hurry up, then down at Valeria. Sweat froze on his temples.

"Valeria, please!" Julian shouted over the roar of the engines, his voice cracking with pathetic desperation. "Elena tricked me! She threatened to expose my old college debts if I didn't siphon the venture capital funds! She made me do it!"

Elena’s head snapped toward Julian, her eyes widening in betrayal. "You lying, cowardly bastard!" she shrieked, swinging her heavy white handbag and striking Julian square across the side of his face. The impact knocked him off balance, sending him stumbling down two steps of the mobile metal staircase.

"You're the one who found the offshore shell company templates on the dark web!" Elena screamed, tears of rage finally breaking through her makeup. "You told me we'd be living in Monaco by the end of the year!"

Agent Miller and two backup officers sprinted up the stairs, forcefully pulling Julian and Elena apart and slapping steel handcuffs onto their wrists. The cold click of the metal cuffs echoed sharply against the aluminum hull of the jet.

Arthur Vance stood by the car, watching the spectacle with impassive dignity. He walked slowly toward his daughter, offering her a warm woolen scarf from his own coat to shield her from the biting wind.

"It's over, my love," Arthur said softly, wrapping the scarf around her shoulders. "They're going away for a very long time."

Valeria looked at Julian as federal agents shoved him into the back of a cruiser, his expensive gray suit stained with grease and oil from the tarmac. She felt a profound sense of closure washing over her. But as the police cruiser's taillights faded into the night, Agent Miller walked over, holding up a sleek smartphone recovered from Julian’s coat pocket.

"Ms. Vance, before we lock him up, you need to see this," Miller said, his face grim. "Julian didn't steal thirty-two million dollars just to run away with Elena. Look at the beneficiary name on the final transfer executed ten minutes ago."

Valeria glanced at the glowing screen, and the blood drained entirely from her face. The recipient wasn't Julian, and it wasn't Elena. It was someone Valeria had buried three years ago.
