Chapter 5 - The Digital Alibi

The fluorescent lighting of the federal interrogation room buzzed with a low, headache-inducing frequency. Valeria sat across a sleek stainless-steel table, her burgundy dress contrasting sharply against the institutional gray walls. Agent Miller placed a heavy manila folder on the table, flipping it open to reveal a thick stack of printed IP logs, bank statements, and encrypted chat transcripts.
"Let's start from the top, Ms. Vance," Agent Miller said, clicking his ballpoint pen twice. "According to these records, your home network was the primary hub for forty distinct wire transfers over the past fourteen months. The destination accounts are all shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands under a holding entity called Meridian Holdings."
Valeria leaned back, resting her hands calmly on the table. Her breathing remained controlled, a testament to the quiet strength she had cultivated over years of enduring Julian’s psychological games.
"Julian told me he needed a dedicated server for his freelance fintech consulting," Valeria said, her voice steady and clear. "Whenever I asked about the data volume, he claimed it was encrypted client proprietary information protected under strict non-disclosure agreements. If I pressed further, he would accuse me of trying to sabotage his career out of jealousy."
Agent Miller nodded slowly, jotting down notes. "And you never checked the router settings yourself? With your family background in tech investments, surely you had the technical literacy."
"Julian changed the administrator master password six months into our marriage," Valeria replied, her dark eyes locking onto the investigator's. "He claimed our Wi-Fi was being hacked by competitors. He locked me out of the local network entirely, restricting my devices to a guest profile. At the time, I thought it was just his usual corporate paranoia. Now, I realize it was a containment strategy."
Arthur stood quietly in the corner of the observation room, watching his daughter through the one-way mirror. Beside him, Beatrice crossed her arms, her jaw clenched. They knew Valeria was telling the truth, but they also knew that federal prosecutors loved tidy narratives—and a disgruntled ex-wife with familial wealth made for a dangerously convenient narrative anchor if Julian's defense attorneys decided to point fingers.
"We believe you, Valeria," Agent Miller said, softening his tone slightly. "The problem is that Julian Montgomery’s legal team is already moving to frame this as a joint conspiracy. They filed an emergency affidavit thirty minutes ago claiming that you were the mastermind behind Meridian Holdings, utilizing your maiden name's banking contacts to launder the capital."
Valeria’s expression hardened into ice. "My maiden name? Meridian doesn't use my family's banking network. It uses a boutique credit union in Delaware—the exact same institution Julian used for his personal cryptocurrency mining operations."
Agent Miller raised an eyebrow, leaning forward. "Can you prove that?"
"Yes," Valeria said, pulling a small, encrypted flash drive from the hidden interior pocket of her white handbag and placing it gently on the metal table. "Before I signed the divorce papers three days ago, my father's IT security team downloaded a complete mirror image of Julian’s local workstation when he foolishly left it connected to our smart-home hub. Every keystroke, every encrypted wallet key, and every confession he typed into his personal notepad is on this drive."
Agent Miller stared at the flash drive in disbelief, slowly reaching out to pick it up. But before his fingers could touch the plastic casing, the interrogation room door flew open, and a frantic junior agent rushed in.

"Sir, you need to look at the tarmac tracker," the agent panted, sweat gleaming on his forehead. "Julian Montgomery just boarded a charter flight to Zurich—and he didn't go alone. He took Elena with him."
