Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Ledger

The chill of the autumn wind hit Elena like a physical blow as she hauled Julian out onto the pavement of Madison Avenue. Her white handbag swung violently against her burgundy dress as she spun around to face him, her chest heaving with a mixture of adrenaline and white-hot fury.
"What was that back there?" Elena hissed, her voice vibrating with suppressed rage. "You told me he was just some lonely venture capitalist who fell for your sob story about a broken marriage! You told me he was our golden ticket out of the suburbs!"
Julian backed away against the cold stone pillar of the restaurant entrance, holding his hands up defensively. His light brown hair fell across his forehead, and the tailored gray suit suddenly looked entirely too big for his trembling frame.
"I didn't know!" Julian stammered, his eyes darting frantically toward the street as if expecting police sirens. "Arthur Vance doesn't go around wearing his corporate portfolio on his lapel! He’s a private equity titan, Elena. People like us don't run in those circles. How was I supposed to know Valeria was his daughter?"
"Because you were married to her for four years, you absolute fool!" Elena snapped, stepping closer, her fingernails pressing into the leather strap of her handbag. "You spent half a decade sharing a bed with a woman whose father controls half the commercial real estate in Manhattan, and you never once bothered to check her family tree?"
Julian opened his mouth to reply, but the sudden buzz of his phone silenced him. He pulled the device from his coat pocket, his face turning the color of ash as he stared at the glowing screen.
"Well?" Elena demanded, crossing her arms over her chest. "Is it your boss asking why you missed the quarterly review?"
"It’s... it’s the corporate compliance department," Julian whispered, his voice barely audible over the roaring traffic. "They’ve locked my terminal. My corporate card just got declined at the valet."
Elena stared at him, the initial shock slowly morphing into a calculated, predatory coldness. She had spent the last eight months playing the other woman, orchestrating Julian’s messy divorce from Valeria, whispering poison in his ear until he willingly handed over his share of the marital assets just to start a new life with her. She hadn't invested her youth in a man destined for financial ruin.
"Listen to me very carefully," Elena said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper as she stepped directly into his personal space. "We are not broke. You are going to call Valeria’s father, you are going to apologize on your knees, and you are going to fix this. If you don't, I swear to God, I will leak every single tax document and offshore receipt you stored on your home laptop before the police even get a warrant."
May you like
Julian swallowed hard, the sweat beading on his forehead despite the autumn chill. He opened his contacts list, his thumb hovering over Valeria's name, only for the screen to refresh with a jarring, full-page alert from the federal bankruptcy court.
