Chapter 10 - The Sovereign's Gambit

The speakers in the lobby hummed with a low, metallic feedback loop before Elena Vance’s voice filled the cavernous space once more, calm and utterly devoid of remorse.

"Put down your weapon, Agent Miller," the intercom commanded. "Unless, of course, you prefer explaining to the Department of Justice why you unlawfully breached a sovereign private trust office without an updated jurisdictional rider."

Agent Miller froze, his finger resting just outside the trigger guard of his firearm. He looked down at the federal warrant in his left hand, his jaw tightening. "Ms. Vance—or whatever legal alias you're currently operating under—you are harboring federal fugitives and tied directly to thirty-two million dollars in embezzled venture capital."

"Embezzled?" The voice on the speaker laughed softly, a dry, elegant sound. "Call it what it is, Agent. Repatriation of assets. Arthur built his fortune on the patents my family brought into the marriage thirty-five years ago. When he tried to freeze me out of the corporate restructuring back in my supposed 'death' year, I simply took my capital and built a parallel portfolio. Julian was merely a convenient instrument to retrieve the remaining domestic liquidity."

Valeria stepped forward, her dark eyes locked onto the camera lens mounted in the corner of the ceiling. "You used me," she said, her voice dangerously quiet, vibrating with a rage that eclipsed her mother's calculated coldness. "You knew Julian was a climber. You pushed him toward me, you orchestrated our marriage, and you let him psychologically break me down for four years just so you could use our home network as a backdoor into father’s server."

"I made you strong, Valeria," Elena’s voice replied, lacking any trace of maternal warmth. "A Vance woman cannot afford to be soft, and you spent four years playing the dutiful, submissive housewife to a pathetic little man. I had to shake you awake. Look at you now—standing in a federal investigation, completely unmoored, yet sharper than you've ever been. You should be thanking me."

Arthur stepped past his daughter, his hands gripping the gold handle of his cane so tightly his knuckles turned white. He stared up at the camera lens, his voice shaking with a mixture of profound grief and boiling fury. "You faked your own death, Elena. You put our family through hell, you made your own daughter mourn at an empty casket, all out of petty greed?"

"Greed?" Elena's tone turned razor-sharp. "No, Arthur. Survival. You were planning to hand the entire empire over to your corporate board while sidelining the bloodline that built it. I simply secured my legacy. And as for Julian—well, the boy outlived his usefulness the moment he allowed himself to be caught by a bunch of local beat cops."

"He's already singing to the federal prosecutors, mother," Valeria countered, stepping into the direct field of view of the camera. "Every shell company, every encrypted wallet key, every signature forgery—it's all on the flash drive Agent Miller handed to the Department of Justice thirty minutes ago. Your parallel portfolio is about to be seized under federal racketeering laws."

The intercom fell completely silent for five full seconds. The only sound was the hum of the HVAC system and the driving rain outside the glass doors.

Then, the looping error code on the directory screens vanished, replaced by a live bank transfer confirmation window. The screen flashed bright red, displaying a total asset drain of one hundred and fifty million dollars from the Vance Family Foundation directly into an unverified international account.

"You forget, my darling daughter," Elena's voice whispered softly from the speakers, dripping with absolute triumph. "The signature required to drain the primary foundation vault wasn't your father's. It was mine. And the transfer completed three seconds ago."
