Chapter 9 - The Final File

The dining room felt impossibly cold after Eleanor was led away. The crystal chandelier cast a harsh, unforgiving light down on the ruined Persian rug and the shattered wine glass. Clara stood frozen near the center of the room, her burgundy dress feeling heavy and restrictive against her skin. Her mother's final words echoed in the quiet space, lingering like a physical curse.
"You haven't seen what is on the very last file of that drive."
Clara slowly turned her gaze toward the laptop screen, where Agent Miller was standing with his hand resting on the edge of the table. The junior agent who had operated the computer looked up, his expression troubled.
"Agent Miller, you should look at this," the junior agent said quietly, clicking on a hidden sub-folder at the very bottom of the directory. The file was labeled with a string of alphanumeric characters and was protected by a secondary biometric lock. "There’s a locked partition on this drive that requires a master administrative authorization key."
Marcus stepped forward, frowning deeply. "I thought we bypassed all the security protocols with Father’s contingency trust."
"The trust opened the financial vaults, Mr. Vance," Agent Miller replied, leaning over the screen. "This partition is separate. It was encrypted personally by Eleanor Vance just four hours ago, right before you arrived."
Clara felt a cold shiver run down her spine. "Four hours ago? That means she knew we were coming, or she anticipated the audit."
"She didn't just anticipate it," Marcus muttered, his face turning pale as a sudden realization hit him. "She set a trap."
"A trap?" Agent Miller asked, glancing between the two siblings. "Explain."
"Mother never leaves loose ends," Marcus said, his voice tightening with anxiety. He looked at Clara. "Think about it. Why would she keep all these incriminating audio logs and financial documents in a Geneva vault that she knew we had access to? She wanted us to find them. She wanted us to bring the feds in."
Clara’s breath hitched. The pieces of the puzzle shifted violently in her mind, revealing a terrifying new picture. "She didn't want to hide the crimes... she wanted to transfer the liability."
Agent Miller’s eyes widened slightly as the legal implications dawned on him. "If the primary trustee—which was Richard Vance, and by extension of the contingency trust, you two—knowingly signed off on the restructured offshore accounts without reporting them within the statutory grace period, you aren't just witnesses or victims."
"We're co-conspirators," Clara finished, her voice dropping to a horrified whisper.
"Exactly," Agent Miller said grimly. He tapped the locked partition on the laptop screen. "And I bet my badge that final file contains the signed legal acknowledgment proving that both of you benefited directly from the laundered funds."
Clara took a step back, staring at the glowing screen as if it were a physical monster. The relief she had felt moments ago evaporated completely, replaced by the suffocating realization that her mother had checkmated them from the very beginning.
"Can you bypass the encryption?" Marcus asked, his voice losing its arrogant edge as panic crept in.
May you like
"Not without a decryption key," the junior agent answered, shaking his head. "And the only person who has that key is currently sitting in the back of a federal transport vehicle."
